View Full Version : 812 gravely

I just bought a gravely 812 with mowing deck. I haven't even tried starting it. It was garaged but it's been sitting for a long time. I have never owned a gravely and there is not any around in my area. I am going to start draining the oil and old gas out. I'm sure I'll have to clean the carburetor and probably put a kit in it. I'm not sure about the transmission. I might get a manual before I do anything to that.
Any advice on this tractor? It looks like a well built tractor powered by a 12hp Kohler.

What other implements or attachments was made for this model?

First of all Welcome to MTF Peevee!
To answer your question there were lots of attachments made for this tractor and if you bought an adapter there were lots of other gravely attachments that could be used on it.
If you go to http://www.oldgravelys.net/docs/ you will be able to download free manuals for your tractor as well as advertisements showing all the attachments available. Some common attachments were the front mounted snow blower and/or snow plow to use in the winter for snow removal. Also many people either use the rear mount tiller made for this series of tractors or they get the front mounted adapter and used the rotary plow from the two wheel gravelys in their gardens.

Peevee,
I have 2 old Gravelys. One is an old 408, which was the smallest 4 wheel Gravely ever made, and had a small 8hp front mounted Kohler, and is currently a racing tractor. I also have an old 812, and i'am currently rebuilding it. They are built to last for years. For the transmission, it has a forward and reverse clutch, and has hi-lo range 4 speed, but really has sixteen speeds, 8 forward and 8 in reverse. I'll post up a specifications chart up to help you out. Congrats on gettin a Gravely! It will pay for itself once it's fixed, they are indestructable machines.:MTF_wel2:

Great tractor you have there. I think the most popular attachments for that tractor are a mowing deck, a plow or a snowblower. You can also ad a kit to the front to attach any of the two wheel attachments that Gravely made. I think the 812 is the perfect home lawn size tractor.
Have fun with it.

Welcome. I have an 812 too and many walkbehinds plus piles (busloads, lol) of attachements.
You'll find others around you, they come out of the woodwork. Where in Tn are you? I live in Huntsville, only 35 miles south of Tn.
I bought my 1st Gravely in Chattanooga about a year ago & there are often some on Craigslist in Nashville.

Peevee, good luck with the tractor. Sounds like it should serve you well. As Helixhippie said, the attachments come up on Craigslist all the time. In time, I'm sure you will find something to hook up.:goodl:

Peevee,
Congratulations.
For info, the 812 has 8 forward speeds, but only 4 reverse speeds. The hi-lo range shift only changes the 4 forward speeds.

High and Low have no affect on reverse. Reverse dosen't get powered thru the High-Low gearset at all.

Hello everyone
I have found a Gravely 812 for sale with a mower deck, Here's the ad
"i have a good gravely tractor it runs great hi lo gears hydraulic rear and belly 50 inch deck . box blade a harrow and the wagon "
The asking price is $1400 and I'd like to know if this is a decent/fair price for this model. From what everyone has said here it sounds like a good reliable tractor. Let me know what you think
Thanks
Bob

I believe this is the ad in Craigslist:
http://norfolk.craigslist.org/grd/1617636102.html
Looks pretty good, but if you are close enough to check it out, I would do so. He's been trying to sell this for a while as I've seen this ad before.
If you do check it out, try it out. Listen for noises, loose steering, forward/reverse clutch condition, and anything you think that may be out of the ordinary.
Great tractor from what I've heard around here. Easy to work on too. If you go check it out, you can always make an offer on it to see what he says. The worst he can say is no.

These tractors are built like a tank, last forever. My DAD bought the 810 in 1974 (I think), used it for years, put it on the side and bought a White. I got it from DAD and have been using it ever since. My DAD was a great man, but could break an anvil with a feather and jury rig anything. After I got the tractor, I went through it to get rid of all the jury rigs, changed the bearings on the mower and now have set up like it came from the factory. This is what I cut grass with today (along with help from the L8 in the garden). I think it is worth getting. Make an offer a few hundred dollars less and see what he says.
If you do get it, this site is all the help/knowledge you will ever need.

Man I wish our snow would go away....

Kbeitz, I actually mowed grass last week. It was rye grass that grows very fast, put seeds down 32 years ago and it still comes up in big patched all over the yard. Very cold and wet this year, don't have my summer garden in yet. Usually I have everything in the ground by now or at the very least plants ready to be planted. Ground is still to cold to plant. We are averaging 10-15 degrees colder than what is normal for this time of the year.

So have we. And been setting new records for low high temps. Those who remember the tomato fields in the Snow thread, well the one just south of us has been picked 4 times.Normally picked one or two times but nowhere in the US are the crops liking the cold.

Bruce,
I was not offended. No apology necessary. I didn't want Peevee to think there was something wrong with his new acquisition.
About a year ago, I met someone who'd just acquired an 816 and complained that the reverse low range was not working. I think that it's intuitive to think low range should apply to both forward and reverse, especially for those that have previous two wheeler or 400 series rider experience.

Thanks John and Bud for your advice on the tractor on Craigslist.
Yes that is the ad. I called him up and he mentioned he had had it out there for a bit. He says the only thing he knows wrong with it is one pulley bearing that is the first one in line after the driveshaft attachment. I may not have that info exactly correct but it sounds like it's the the pulley that all the blades rely on to transfer power from shaft to belt.
He mentioned the whole tractor is gear driven. I do like the sound of that. I know Gravely has a good reputation and I'm hoping this will be the last tractor I will need to buy - unless of course I hang around this forum long enough and get the "bug".
I don't actually plan on doing much mowing since I'm buying it to work a decent sized garden.
Thanks again and I'll let you all know what I find out
PS I planted some peas this past weekend and I have a decent crop of spinach and lettuce along with some garlic and swiss chard in a coldframe. I'll post a pic later so those of you who are snowbound can see some green. First winter I've seen in years that we haven't had one 70º day in a few months
Best

It's hard to fathom all of the planting/picking/grass cutting already happening while things remain snow covered here. We picked up more snow this last weekend. Maybe more sometime this week. Hmmm... maybe "snowpeas".

I keep looking at all the snow records being set south of you. Clarksburg, WV had its snowiest Feb ever. And Beckley has had the most snow ever in one season for its records. And both are to get more this week.
