Hello

I have a stump grinder with a Magnum Series M18 motor .. It runs like
a
champ .. but last year it starting leaking oil.
I stripped all the cooling tins off of it .. cleaned off all the
built
up grease and oil . I started the motor and let it run for a few mins
and saw the oil leaking from behing the flywheel .. I assume it a
crank
shaft oil seal ?? Does that sound rite ??
If I pull the flywheel .. can I just change the seal .. or does the
motor need to be ripped apart ?? Any help here would be nice ..
before
I order the needed parts .. I would like to know what I am getting
into ... I dont think it would be a good idea to let the leak go ..

Thanks
Ken

Ken,

I’m not intimate with the Kohler M18 so I can’t tell you what
needs to be done. But if you go to Kohler’s web site you can
download the entire service manual for that engine.

Ken:

You should be able to change it without pulling the crank. Just slip in behind it with a seal puller or even a cotter pin pull and pull out the old one. Then very carefully slip the new one in place and tap it in flush with the case.

I have done a few this way and no problem afterwards.

Just make sure the seal area is real clean and no dirt there.

Thanks for your help guys .. I hope to pick-up the seal tomorrow and fix it this weekend, when my neighbor is home and has his garage open with about $50,000.00 worth of snap-on tools to borrow, I borrow all the special tools .. and he borrows my stump grinder, log splitter and even my 1250 with the johnson loader. We have pretty good trust between us .. Just one thing I will lend to NO one .. my first Homelite SXL that I bought new back in 1979. Paid $389.00 for it..and still cuts better then most saws I have used.

My answer to anyone who asks?? I tell them they have a better chance of borrowing my wife.

Thanks again for the info AEGT5000 and AlbanyBob :trink39:

Ps .. I dont even drink
