Has anyone used the RustBeeter rust removal product? If you believe the advertising, this stuff is the greatest thing since sliced bread (as long as you are not in too much of a hurry).

I have never heard of it. I have used rust converters (like Rust-Mort) with very good results, but have no experience with Beet by products.

Permtex makes a product that a spray on, that I`ve used before. I think it`s called Extend turns bare or rusted metal black and then can you top coat it. It`s best to get as much rust off first.

First time I used it I think I sprayed to much on, it`s clear, but came back later. Like a day later and the whole area was black and looked good. I got it a Benny`s store.

That stuff sounds like a Messy Waste of time. I will stick to My Electrolysis method of removing rust. Much faster, Cheaper, and cleaner.

I did not buy any yet; I was curious if anyone had any experience with that specific product. Electrolysis works for rust removal, but if you don't watch what you are doing, it will continue to eat into the metal you want to keep.

Supposedly this product won't do that. Because it is essentially a chemical reaction instead of an electrolytic process, it is certainly believable that only the rust would be removed. Also, the waste from using this product should be biodegradeable, and easily disposed of on your own property.

I was at HD the other day and saw that. I might try it on a few projects. I wish they had it in white to make a paintable base.

I was at HD the other day and saw that. I might try it on a few projects. I wish they had it in white to make a paintable base.

It top coat easily, just sprayed primer over the area treated, I didn`t think it worked at first. I repaired a rocker panel and was spraying it from the underside got a little to close, and the area looked really wet. But to my surprise it turned black by the next day, I tried scratching it off and didn`t have any luck so it`s does soak in to the metal.

I`ve also used a product sold by Eastwood call Oxie-Solv. I checked there web site and it not listed any more this product is it`s replacement it`s applied the same way it`s called Rust Dissolver. You wet the surface and keep it wet, then rinse it off with water and as the surface dries a zink coating forms.

The last time I used this stuff was on the mower deck of my older commercial mower. I put the mower away without cleaning off under the belt covers and the next spring it was all rusted up. it was covered with leaf dust from last fall gotten wet and it got rusty.

I just sprayed it on let it set and rinsed with water blew it dry and it all turned to a zink coating as the sun warmed the metal. If you treat a part and there is any left before flushing with water just pour it off and put it back in the container to use again.

This one gallon of Oxie-Solv is over ten or more years old and still works. It wasn`t cheap when I bought it that many years ago, and the new product isn`t either. here`s a link if you`d like to take a look.

It smells great! It is sitting on my desk waiting to be mixed!
I need to get a 5 gallon container, the one you have laying around everywhere until you need them (somehow they disappeared).

After my post asking for an update, I saw the one from Dan about your recent medical scare. You can certainly be forgiven for not getting to it yet under the circumstances. So glad you are out and about. Like many here, I find your enthusiasm for your projects an inspiration to keep going on mine.

I've been using Rustoleum Rust Reformer. It converts rust to a paintable surface. Sprays on easy. Rustoleum came out with that stuff years ago, I like to be able to spray it on and its done. I use two coats.

I've used DURO Extend with good results. Recently tried NAVAL JELLY and wish I didn't waste my time....:Disgus:

The concept of RUSTBEETER is that it actually removes the rust, leaving a rust-free surface, without attacking the base metal. EXTEND and RUST REFORMER chemically change the red rust (iron oxide) to a different form of, you guessed it, IRON OXIDE!!, without removing it. Admittedly it is a more stable form of iron oxide, bit it is still there but with a coating to hold it in place. New oxides will not form.

NAVAL JELLY contains phosphoric acid, which will remove rust, but will continue to eat at the base metal if left wet. Electrolysis will also remove rust, but will also remove base metal if left too long.

Hence my interest in the product RUSTBEETER, which I see advertised in mags like "Antique Power". Seems expensive, but if it works with no damage to the part, and with no particular effort on my part, it would be the first cousin to magic. And it is biodegradeable because it is derived from sugar beets, so there are no disposal issues to worry about.
