A couple of questions regarding John Deere #5 Caster-Wheel Power Mowers.
1. Over what time period were they made?
2. Can you determine the year of one of these? How?
Thanks....
Steve,
I can't say for sure when these guys were made. I do know that dad bought one in the mid 50s to cut his hay with his trusty B John Deere. It was sure an improvement over the old horse drawn mower that we replaced with the #5.
Ours mounted on the tractor with a couple of approximately 2" diameter stubs that mounted on the side of the swing drawbar support. Our tractor had a geared lift that was used mostly for the cultivator. An arm mounted on the lift's square shaft and hooked to the mower with a cable. This would lift the cutting bar off the ground for transport.
There is a site retiredtractor dot com that has some pictures of it in use. He also has specifics on the different methods of mounting the mower.
I will keep looking. Did a search on the John Deere official site, but it found nothing.
