MTD Yard Machines GOLD

Hi guys -

I asked for this MTD thread back in March and finally have a picture of my MTD to post.

It is a 2001 MTD Yard Machines GOLD, 42" deck, Lawn Tractor with an Intek Briggs & Stratton 17.5 HP, Overhead Valve, Anti-Vibration System, single cylinder, engine.

People bash the heck out of the MTD Tractors but I've got to say this tractor has been a tough little machine. I have used it to cut/mow the lower part of my property which consist of Sage Brush and Saw Grass (up to 5' tall). The tractor just keeps going and going. I like it just as much as I do my Craftsman GT5000.

I like that Ed ,, Some chrome wheels and bumpers would look nice on that dark color , Lol

I had a similar machine, it had the 14.5OHV before B&S marketing beefed up the HP ratings, got it in fall of '98 at Lowes (Lowes branded MTD) for $599, was a clean repaired return, and they were running $999 at the time! Never used much, just a spare machine, I did have to lube the shift mechanism, sold it after a couple of years for $675.

:fing02: Agreed, that is a nice looking mower and sounds like it is built pretty well too.

This is an upgraded model of the Yard Machines line. Most of the Yard Machines mowers are red but this one is black (as you can see) and had the upgraded B&S engine in it. Anyway, it is a tough little tractor and just keeps chugging along. The wife uses it mostly and when I told her I'd get her a new one this year to mow with, she wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Yes Argee, I believe it is the top of the Yard Machines line.

i have a question about a mtd it will only pull in 8th gear i just had new belts put on it and it pulled good for about 2 mowings then it went right back to only pulling in 8th gear again it is a mtd gold with 22 horse power tecumseh engine on it i would appreciate any help. thank you

1st off :Welcome1: bamaangel! you mentioned the belts being changed and it seemed better. did you see the condition of the old belt(s) if they werent chewed up the clutch may be out of adjustment and the belt may be loose and slipping. HTH bernie.

Mine is the auto type tranny, however, I think you may have a belt routing issue. You may also want to check that a pulley is not loose or perhaps a belt tensioner. Can you adjust your tensioner?

thank you both i will try both suggestions.I bought it from my sister-in-law and she didn't keep any books that came with it so we didn't even know where to start on it.
