I have a JD 820, and I took the flywheel cover off and put a prybar on the flywheel to turn engine over. The main engine turned over fine. How do I check if the pony engine is seized? What I tried doing was engaging the lever on the pony engine that allows the bendix to contact the flywheel. While holding that lever I turned the flywheel and pony as one? Is there a better way to do it? I could not actually see pony turn but I could feel more resistance on flywheel. Please advise. Thanks gentleman :not_worth
Why not just use a battery? I think that the pony engine would just use a regular 12 volt battery. Should be able to try it by using jumpers cables.
if you use a 12 volt to try your pup engine unhook your coils before hooking 12 volts to the system i learnt that one the hard way on my 80

I was going to use a battery but a friend warned me about doing that, saying I could burn out one of those $$$ coils?!?!?
Are you talking about the ignition coils on the pup?
What I usually do is just ground the coil wire. That way I don't have to worry about over voltage and arcing in the coil. But either will work.

I don't think you would ever turn the pony with the flywheel. The gear ratio is not to your advantage.
Do you suspect the pony is seized? How about a 6 Volt battery?
I have an R and I had no idea the ignition coils were worth that kind of money! I'll keep that in mind if I ever have to jump it!
