Are you blowing snow on a paved driveway or on gravel or grass?

Is your ground below the snow frozen or is your blower digging into the sod/gravel/rocks?

Is everything aligned correctly on the blower or is there a bent part hanging up on the housing and snapping the bolts?

I was breaking a lot of shear bolts on my JD before I resolved the answers to the above questions. I now use a back blade to clear snow from grassy and dirt covered areas to allow the ground to freeze up solid before I attempt to blow snow off of those areas.

Thanks, I was on paved driveway but i did push on to un paved, and kicked up gavel ?
I had a ingersoll 4018 single stage none 4wd before my Bx, It was a good tractor
Tank--but the BX push's snow allot better , it's overall a more usefully tractor

Thanks--- I was at my dealer and bought 20 bolts ( just in case) and there was to guys that before me with the same problem ( firsts good storm to )

I have the 1500 as well and I broke one on the first storm I used it on. It was the shear pin on the chute impeller that broke, BUT I was using it on grass and chewed up a little turf. (OPPS!!) I replaced it with one that they gave me when it was purchased and haven't had any issues since. MAKE SURE that you are using grade 5 Shear bolts as speced in the manual. Regular shear bolts will just get sheared away under regular use.

Leo,

My advice is to have lots of shear pins on hand. Sometimes I go through none over an entire season, and sometimes I go through five or six. After a while you will see, that sometimes you will shear a pin in the darndest situation -- ie two inches of snow with no explainable reason -- while motoring through two feet of white crap will do nothing. Remember, though a pain in the a$$, the sheared pin is sparing some impact to your driveline.

Cheers

That's what I figure anyways. I just hit a little turf/mulch and the thing snapped. Not a big deal, five minutes at most to get back running.

I plan on buying 20 of em next time I'm near my dealer. It is tough to find them outside of the dealers in my area, especially grade 5.

grade 5 bolts wont work?

I have a corn head with one hell of an appetite for shear pins on the gathering chain drives, I've started using bolts since I ran out of shear pins from IH dealer and so far have not replaced one bolt. Food for thought.

Sorry for my ignorance (I don't have have a snowblower)..and I understand the theory on the shear pins (being weakest link to fail, rather than something else)....But why not use gr 5 bolts, and leave nuts loose??

From what I've noticed with my blower on the BX1500, I was really breaking them the first two storms we had this year (broke 4 in 2 storms). Two of those were the result of a large rock that was kicked into my driveway and hidden by the snow by a car that spun out on our road and kicked debris into my path overnight.

Since then, I haven't broken any. The difference was I read the owners manual and noticed that it states to start and stop the blower in low RPMs only. Makes a ton of sense since if you are at a dead stand still and engage the PTO spinning at the 540 RPM, thats a ton of torque on the shear pins and I think by doing that over and over they weaken and snap.

Since I started to make that change, I haven't broken any.

I did find a hell of a buy on Kubota Grade 5 shear pins on ebay. I bought a lot of 100 pins, washers and nuts for $32.50!!

They go for $1.73 each at our local dealer!

Going from a single stage to a two stage may take some getting used to. With the two stage you need to go slower to let the snow get back to the fan and blow it out the chute unlike a single stage with the high speed auger which throws the snow directly out the chute.

I use the metric shear bolts that are sold by honda for my snowthrower but use standard nuts that I have ran a tap thru to change the thread and put the nut on the bolt half way and hit it with a hammer to make a locking nut when tightened, they want to much for a throw a way nut.
