Hi all,
Just received this today for my birthday (I picked it out!). I bought it from thesmartfarmer.com and can tell you Nick Moore was curtious and nothing but pleasant to deal with. I would definately use them again. I have ~ 1200 lbs of lime to put down, and thought this would be just the ticket. Of course, it's raining cats and dogs today, so I won't get to give you a progress report for a couple of days, but so far the spreader looks well made. The only beef, and something I'll easily modify, is the mechanism to open and close the chute; it really isn't that positive. Here are a couple of pics:

Wow JDF, that's nice! Can you run sand/salt/ice melt in there for the winter?
And Happy Birthday!!

JDF, it sure looks heavy enough... what size hooper?

Thanks guys,
Simple John, yes it runs off the rear PTO.
Kid Muddy, I'm sure it would have no problem with ice melt; sand would have to be pretty dry I would think.
draddogs, the hopper will hold 300#'s of material. The manual says it will cover a 60' swath; or 30' to the left or 30' to the right.
Can't wait to get some actual working time in with it!

These also come in a 750lbs hopper and they are very handy. We only have about 12 left in this stock but we expect more in around June. These will spread about anything and it does not take hardly any HP to run one, just a cat1 3-point hitch.

I agree, they don't take any hp to run; I probably ran my 2210 around 2000 rpm's, just enough to go up and down the terrain I was covering with lime. On level ground I'm sure it would have worked at idle.

JDFantic, be sure to thoroughly wash and COMPLETELY coat the spreader with a corrosion prevention compound (comes in spray cans) or a mix of heavy oil thinned with a bit of kerosene. Especially if you have used it to spread fertilizer, or you will have a pile of rust and corrosion when you go to use it the next season.

You can also spread a generous amount of diesel in the hopper and on the gearbox to help that also.

Chief & Nick,
I just waxed it before using it (pelletized lime) and washed it and dried it after. In about two weeks I'll need to put down some step 2 weed control. Do you think I need to do more than wax?

Well this is a very well built machine but any piece of metal will rust. What you need to watch the most is after each use, get everything off of the gearbox. Like chief stated before you can buy the corrosion prevention in a can. I ahve always just used a little bit of ag diesel.

Fertilizer tends to be very corrosive, so a thorough wash and getting the stuff out of the crevices is important. I can remember using the hand held crank spreaders and getting fertilizer in my pockets and having my keys corrode up by the end of the day.

Nick,
So the suggestion would be to use the anti-corrosive on the aluminum housing of the gearbox and the shafts? What about the hopper itself? I can't really see using anything oily there, as the material to be applied would want to stick?

JD, the ammonium nitrate in most fertilizers is EXTREMELY corrosive. Wax may help protect some but will not prevent corrosion. CPC in a can or mix up a bug sprayer full of diesel/kerosene mixed with a heavy oil and spray the spreader down good after you are done using it and you have rinsed it off good. I spread 6,000 lbs. 19-19-19 in mine last season and did this. Mine looks just like the day I bought it.

I am not too far from Clarksville out by LBL but not for long.

Chief,
I'll take your advice. Next question, where do I find the CPC? My Deere dealer, an automotive supply house?

You can use a fogging oil.

or
I something similar to this but it is an aviation corrosion preventive spray.

Some kersene mixed with some SAE 40 wt. or waste gear oil is the cheapest way to go. I like the kerosene mix as the kerosene tends to pretty much evaporate and it leaves a nice thin film of oil to protect the metal. You can mix it up in a windex spray bottle and spray it that way.

Chief, do any of the corrosives find their way to the back of the tractor?

WD-40 after a good hosing works for me and has for years!!
I am thinking of buying a spreader for my BX2200. You got my attention when you mentioned a 60' swath. 60' is too wide for my property. How easy is it to control the swath via PTO RPMs? I would like to spread a 10-12 foot swath (especially when I am spreading weed & feed). If I kill the flowers off, I will be dead meat!

I would defiantly use it on everything other than the hopper (unless you are putting it up for the season) but use a little diesel in the hopper. Seed will not stick to it when it dries.

They shouldn't because there is a gaurd preventing anything to be thrown towards the tractor.

You can slow the RPM's down and let it bearly pour out of the hopper if you would like to do that. After you get one and play with it you will get to konw how fast and what RPM's to set it to.

JWE,
I can't really answer this yet. I believe the manual said 60' at 30" height. My 2210 won't lift that high, so I probably had less coverage. Also, I ran the PTO around 2000 rpm's. Then there is the material for a variable, and I would think the flow setting. I was putting down lime, which my lawn hadn't had for 10 years and needed badly. I really didn't care how evenly I put it down. Also it was windy, which made it hard to be more precise. In a few weeks I'll be putting down step 2 and will need to pay close attention to the swath/pattern. I'll post more detailed results then.

I haven't had this problem with my spreader as it has a scatter shield to prevent that. I have a Cosmo spreader that throws 20 ft. either side of the tractor at full pto rpm.

Thanks for the advice ALL! I have not only followed it for the new spreader, but my walk-behind Lesco, and the rear of the tractor, links etc. You guys are great! Keep up the good work.

Nick,
Just used the spreader to put down a bunch of step-2. Worked great, but one comment: the agitator (running about 2000 rpm's) when going up and down my slope, tended to throw out the top of the hopper quite a bit of fertilizer. Does the manufacturer make a nice plexiglass cover for this unit? I know I could fab something, but a nice tight custom fit would be nice.
Other than that, it took longer to clean up the unit, oil as recommended and put it away in the attic of my shed then it did to put the fertilizer down.
Cheers

2 ways to fix that problem
1. slow down the RPMS
2. Take lower part of the agitator off. You really only need it on when you are preading fine grass seed.
It is just held on by that lock nut and will come on and off pretty easily. Glad you like the machine and let me know if I can help in any other ways.

If that does not work for you I just found a piece that will allow you to run it with no agitator at all.
