Hello, I have a 2005 John Deere 4230 with a 400X loader on it. When you start the Tractor it Smokes like Crazy! The Dealer has changed the Injectors & the Pump but it still STINKS. If you go out to Plow Snow you will have to leave you Clothes in the Garage to Air out only after 1/2 Hour of Work. We are using Very High quality of Fuel. They say thats the way it is! I'm Ready to Trade it in, but don'tknow what I would Buy!!
Any Thoughts??

I guess thats a Compact utility tractor.4230 throws me off because that was a farm tractor from the 70's.But we had a 7000 series JD that did that and it would burn your eyes.Turned out it was a timing problem. We have a 4410 CUT that smells like sulfur under load but nothing to bad however the front wheel on the inside is dis colored from the exaust being point on it.

:Welcome1: First Welcome Skip, glad you found your way here. My first thoughts were injectors but you say the dealer changed them and the pump....johndeere might have something with his reply. Maybe some of the other members here can offer some advice or have expierienced the "stink" problem.

Skip,
Is this your first diesel? Do you have anything to compare it to? How about power is it making all that it's supposed to? If not, did the dealer dyno it before he delivered it?
Cheers

No, This is not the first! But the Worst!!
I was raised on a Farm, the First Diesal I drove was a new JD 3010, then a 4010,4020 with a Cab, 4430's etc. I sold a 3010 Kobota when I bought the 4230.
The Dealer has Changed the Injectors, The Pump & numerous other things per JD Warranty! They had it on the dyno after the Changes again & it is up to Spec!!

Skip,
I don't have an answer then. Perhaps post the same question on tractorbynet and tractorpoint.
Hope you get it straightened out.
Cheers

When the Tractor is Started the Motor goes to Full RPM, it spits & sputters Black & White Smoke, filling the Shop area where it is Parked! Once you get going with it you don't really see the Smoke-but your eyes start Burning & the Driver smell like he was sitting on the exhaust pipes of 10 Cat 3208's when they start up Cold!

I know what you mean about the Cat 3208 one makes it look like the place is on fire 10 Wow!!!!!!!!!I never knew the Yanmars had an advancement that raised the RPM'S like the older 50 series John Deere line 4450 4650 4850?That was part of the pump. When they first started they raced for a few seconds then idled down.I never did like that about them. What does your dealer say about that? Our 4410 does not advance when started.Maybe there using a different type pump now?I would ask about a timing problem the burning eyes was what made us take the 7410 in and were glad we did.Its now smoke free.I sometimes spend 8 hours on a 4410 during the summer.Very little smoke and only a sulfur smell under heavy loads for a few seconds only.Something is not right for sure.

Skip,
This brings back an experience from not so long ago. We had a 3 cylinder Yanmar that fits your operating description to a "T". Especially the burning eyes inside the shop. We discovered that the previous owner had installed injectors with oversized nozzles (Hoping to make more HP??). Same symptoms as yours...when warmed up it ran fairly well, but your clothes smelled of unburnt fuel and your eyes stayed irritated no matter what. We swapped the injectors from one of my similar models and it made quite a difference - way less smoke and no smell or burning eyes inside the shop.
One other thing that it did on start up was it would fire on one, then two and then three cylinders consecutively, instead of firing on all three immediately. It was so subtile that I didn't catch it right away, but our mechanic did almost instantly. Does yours do that? Anyway, I hope it is something simple...and Welcome to MTF.

Mark, Thank You, I will mention this to the JD Dealer as this Tractor only has about 80 Hours on it!
They really don't think anything is Wrong!!!!

My old Kubota L185 tosses a plume of white smoke on start up and has done it from the day I bought it (to me this normal and condensation). I am going to suggest if the tractor is up to spec I might suggest something I did and it is this, get some flexible drainage pipe (without the slits in it) that is close to the size of the exhaust pipe and attach it to the tractors exhaust on start up and pipe the smoke out of the garage. I do that with 3 inch flexible tubing that I had laying around the garage. My garage doesn't smell like a truck stop anymore, I just leave the piping on it only long enough to get the tractor up to normal oil pressure and the smoking stops for the most part and then simply remove the pipe and away I go.
