Well, the boating season is once again upon us. I was thinking about posting some stuff here from our club pond, and wondered if anyone was interested in it.
Our club pond does not open til June, but this is the time of the year that the boats are being built, etc. So far, I have one boat to paint which I could post on as well. Once the pond opens is when it gets interesting...motors blowing up, wrecks at 70 MPH, and other misc. situations with all the crazy people in the club.
I will not be building a boat this season again, as I am still saving for my next project car, but I work on alot of the boats and take alot of pictures. Im also always there to help them set up and tear down after club runs and such. Theres simply never a dull moment, and things happen quick.
Would anyone be interested to take a "tour" through an exciting RC boat season?

I would love see more info about RC boats. My wife and I want to get a couple for our pond. And I would really like an RC sailboat, that always looked like fun. I built a rocket boat when I was younger that used Estes model rocket engines. The hull was an old Star Wars X-Wing model kit and once I got the weight distribution right it went like a batouttahe!!.

Cool, sounds good. Again, it will be a little while before we really start tearing things up, but the season is right around the corner.
For those who are interested, heres a link to our club. http://www.angelfire.com/oh4/piranha/

I know Chips Sub was suppose to come to the surface if it had problems but it didnt. ROF Hey Chip did your Sub ever come home? ROF

The Subs would be cool to have in a pool. That way, when it was underwater, you could see it...and in Chips case, you could see it when it sank to the bottom. Theres is supposedly a big submarine in our club pond, along with hatch covers, tuned pipes, prop/propshafts, a few fuel tanks, etc.
DYT- those are neat little boats, and the RTS (return to shore) thing is pretty cool if you don't have a catch boat. I had the fastest gas powered mono at our pond (56.4 MPH), and that is slow compared to the nitro outriggers. We have several boats that will run consistantly at 70-75 MPH on Stalker radar. That is flat out haulin'.

I love to see pictures of about anything especially after they have wrecked at 70mph.

Nope no signs of the lost sub, never even got an oil slick after all this time. Guess I reallay need to go and place a floating wreath on the pond in memory of all the hands that were lost during that tragic event ;-)
I was in the pool supply place yesterday getiing some Bromine tablets for the hot tub, and noticed they got a wall full of some pretty neat RC water craft....all electric RC powered. I liked the sub, as I liked to take it down and manuver it around my fish etc, but its use was limited. to being close and in good clean water......so since i am not a speedboat fan or a seadoo type fan, and more of a trawler or cabin cruiser type, I spotted a nice huge Ocean going tug RC boat, and a Fireboat in the store. Heck the fire boat even sprays water out a nozzle. They are large for what they are considering their price and just a good size and not fast. They also had one fine looking Freighter complete with cargo containers etc, about 3 feet long, which was super sharp but so was the price........but I am contemplating buying the ocean going tug boat to play with......Its about 24 inches long and comes with radio and charger and batteries (nicads) priced at $99.00

How large a pond and how deep is the pond y'all use? I bet that guy was sick loosing a fully outfitted sub. I was upset and mine was under $20.00 :trink40:
I had looked for a replacement sub, and stumbled on lots of info on some serious subs in my searches.........sure had me drooling. Heck they even had some that could fire a torpedo, or ballistic missile....some awesome stuff.

Thats the cool thing about RC. Whatever you're into, they make it. Dumas makes a neat sportfishing yacht I think like 3' long. It has outriggers, a wooden ****pit, tuna tower, etc. And something I always thought was neat but have never got into it yet is battleship competition where the huge boats actually fire BB's at each other, and the last one floating wins.
Anyway, I'm not sure how big our pond is, but it's pretty good size. It is also shallow- like 4' deep in some places. Every once in awhile, someone will get loose, take a bad bounce, and go completely under. This boat here went under and never came up. Tony (the guy in the pic) walked out into the pond and eventually found it with his feet. It was stick in the mud deep enough to pack mud around the engine and tuned pipe. It looked alot worse when the mud was still all over the boat itself. It also got mud packed into the little Walbro carb, so the engine was disassembled. Water is fine usually, but mud is a different story.

Also, heres an overhead shot of our pond. The 6 black dots were put there to symbolize the buoys on the course.

Dumas makes some awesome stuff.....I had always liked their big ocean going tug, Mr. Darby. I like steam engines, and as a machinist and foundry type, I have made a few small steam engines, and had always wanted to get a boat to install a steam engine in........We about as far apart in regards to RC boats as one can get. I like em slow, you like em fast........but we both like em that float!
My grandfather (a tool and die maker and into foundry as well) made a river boat many many years ago. It was the typical stern wheeler, you would see back in the 1800's running the mississippi river....All the fancy trim and decks, big smoke stacks etc.........he also made a steam engine to power it........this was long before radio control, but I remember him putting it on his farms pond and having it set to go around in a circle...........smelling the steam and oil, smoke from the stacks.........I had always hoped i would get it some day, but my uncle laid claim to it when my grandfather died, and odds it was trashed or pawned or destroyed very shortly after he acquired it, as he never held onto anything.

That would be neat to see. Id like to see the steam engine too. Im not all about speed...I have an electric car that does 16 MPH, and at times can be just as fun as something fast, just because it's not too intense. RC planes are great, and I got to where I could solo comfortably (high wing trainer), but everytime I flew it, my knees were knockin'. It's hard to relax in the kind of setting.
