Nope.. wasn't happy with it... buffed it out... rough part was I had to wait for it to cure good... had to set and stare at it for days...was hard to do.. on the flip side.. it made a great additional coat of primer!

Looks like it came out really nice. Always wanted to paint a Ford tractor blue...just never owned one (yet).

BPS paints in the can.. Ford Blue, and ford grey (light). Valspar hardner. Also had a few rattle cans of the blue and grey for touch up.

Used BPS implement 'grey' primer (sandable).. as well as some rattle cans for hard to get to spots.

Started the job using the same paint rig I've had for a couple years... a 89$ (chinese) 2hp/4g pancake compressor, and an extra 10 g tank plumbed in
a 19$ oiler/filter/water trap/regulator also chinese.. (but never added oil to the oiler side..), and a nice 14.99 chinese paint gun, that was on sale for 9.99 they day I bought it... been using that for 2 years now.. works awesome.. just have to have some patience with air buildup...

I use naptha as spray thinner, and the gun 's range for psi is 28-50 and I like to paint around 35-40.

I also have an inline filter right at the gun.. they are disposable.. i get them from TSC.. 6$ a pop.. removes water GREAT.. just screw connectors on it.. use it up.. remove connectors and replace cartridge..
Last 2 days of the project, i 'upgraded' to a 5(peak)hp / 27 gallon compressor with a built in regulator.. courtesy of my mom ( birthday this weekend), and TSC for putting it on sale for 199$.. still got the el-cheapo gun and the cheapo regulator.

After seing the finish on my 2n, Allis G, and this 5000.. I can deffinatley say that the gun and paint ( BPS ain't the most expensive stuff...) have much less to do with the end result than the sanding and metal finish and prep work, and weather variables..

Sounds like close to what I am doing. The BPS paint realy isnt that bad. I kinda like the fact that it goes on well, and realy forgiven to mixing. Pretty much you get it to spry out the gun, its good. [thanks Mark for all the tips!!!!]

Paul, Any time.

What Chris said is so true. I have twin vertical compressors set up with a 140 gallon air volume, a dedicated air line and hose (for painting only), two water traps, mixing station, outside plenum twin blowers for cross flow filtered air that makes an area in my shop a spray booth...and often use my SATA guns. Literally thousands invested and mostly unnecessary.

Proof? Soundguy's restorations. It is, and always has been about surface preparation. There is no substitute for clean, straight sheet metal as it gives you the best and deepest reflectivity. Whereas the smallest imperfections, left unrepaired, will be visible on your first pass with the top coat. And more magnified with each coat applied. I know they are just tractors :), but even the smallest blemish, the ones most people may not immediately see - the painter will for sure.

A painted tractor with rough or no body work performed, is still way better than one left to the elements and mother nature.

IMHO of course.

When i did my 2n a couple years ago.. I was out there measuring with a measuring cup.. .. exactly x hardner to XXX paint.. then agitate.. let set to activate for XX minutes.. then thin to X viscosity on the chart for the spray gun... all by the book.. as i was new to painting. now I pour the paint into the gun.. 'eyeball' the hardner, and dump in some naptha.. stir it.. look at the paint running off the stir stick.. and 'eyeball' that as my viscosity gauge..

I leave that set to activate, and drag the compressor lines out, and hook up my regulator and set it.. By that time I figure 'enough' time / 30 min has past and start spraying paint. So yes.. I agree.. the BPS paint is pretty decent...( though having gained a bit of experience in these last few tractor jobs has helped me imensly... my painting time has droppe dby nearly half on the last two units..

You left out the "....put it it the gun, see its too thinks becouse it just spits, so, dump in out, thin it some more, and dump it back in..."

Almost. I have a piece of scrap 3/16 plate laying on the scrap pile.. about 8" wide and 3' long. It's my 'test victom'.. I walk over to it.. and paint it.. if paint is too thick.. I usually don't even dump the gun.. I crack it open and add naptha and stir.. then cycle the gun in a little cup of naptha to clear it.. then start over... but yeah... same difference!! ROF
