Well, to bring everyone up to date on my latest project.. I have a 1975 ford 5000 diesel, gear tranny, power steering.

I've corrected the mechanical issues, got the lucas "prince of darkness" to charge and got the dash working. Changed a belt.. fluids and filters, and addressed a few leaks.

Finished priming it today, and started painting. Was cool outside .. so i did small parts.. Got 3 rims painted.. then had to clean up for work. I hope to get the last rim, and perhaps the fenders painted this weekend, temp and weather permitting.

The small stuff is gonna take me longer than the tin and cast I can see.

Chris,

Are you shooting for the same type of restoration as your Allis? Are you going to keep teasing us with out any before and after pix? I think you should call in sick so we have something to drool over :)!

I gotta be honest. The Allis G was a 'good' job. I did her up to be a trailer queen.. and she is waxed and in the garage.. and only goes out a few times a year to shows.. I corrected every blemish on her tin.. etc.

This ford is gonna be a working restoration.. like my previous fords. Parts i can repair and save I will.. I'm not shooting for replacemnets.. etc. For examply.. both running boards on the 5000 needed welding to repair cracks, and one had a support bent out and broke. I welded them up and ground them down as much as possible... On the allis.. I would have replaced or remanufactured them.

I did remove some small dents and rust holes. There is one dent on the nose, and one dent on the fender i am leaving be. I think Id do more damage trying to repair them than good... and the tin is otherwise disease free and straight. Couple rust holes and extra holes in the fenders that I fixed. Previous owner liked to add rear lamps. Had holes drilled for about 4 of them on one side.. and 2 on the other.. I think he just added new lamps when the old ones failed.

Lucas genny and regulator were a challange. A bit of help from the ford board, and some sage advice and a spar regulator for a ford hundred series from jimCox got me back in business.

My work schedule is hard right now... I'm tring to get every working minute into the machine.. Pics will comne though. i have been taking them. Next rainy / dark day.. I'll post a few.. uh.. teasers for ya! Here's one.. and YES.. I got rid of thet bent swept back smoke stack. The previous owner just set it on.. the pip diameter was over an inch too big.. he tried to clmp it down.. but ithe stack moved freely.

WOW thats quite a machine!!! In my book, a working resto is the best. Lets you keep using it for what it is intended for.

Hit some rain last weekend that litterally 'rained on my parade'.... added to my sand paper bill.. ahem..(cough).. anyway.. once again.. finish sanding and priming done.. gotta a minor touch up or two on the prime to do.. and otherwise it is ready to paint. Fenders, and rims are more or less done.

I just need a couple warm non windy DRY days to get to the 90% mark.. hopefully they roll around in the next week or so.

Treated myself to a nice paint respirator, with good dual cartridges... covers about everything you can get... still not awesome for isocyanate.. but then.. I'm not painting in an enclosed room.. but rather out in the open...

I had her all masked and taped off.. but we had some sub-hurricane winds come up sunday night and blew 99% of my paper away... ho..hum.. gotta re-mask it..

Always the little stuff.
