got my staples out yesterday and had xrays...
i asked about if i could have hurt it when i 'lost my balance' and the doc said
it looked fine and he 'had that thing in there pretty secure'
the xrays looked fine and the doc said i should be about ok to try to use a cane:congrats:
which im trying now when i walk around....
its still stiff and sore but definetly on the mend...
oh, i bought myself an early birthday gift too...
(never thought id get excited about a cane:fing20: )

if you get to the point of really depending on a cane...instead of this flash and glitter stuff...get the one that grabs your forecep...there's one you'll get excited about... the weight is on your hand, but it takes the strain off your wrist...you just have to learn that quick elbow flick "dismount" to open doorknobs and such. My main cane retracts to about 18", but drug stores also carry one that folds up (bungied thru the middle) to about 10"...this may seem silly until you want to jump in a car without spearing someone.
incidently...nice cane...in a Mardi Gras sort of way...

i used those before and they work well...
as for my 'mardi gras' style caneROF
do you think its too flashy?
i saw the canes at the fryeburg fair in person and came very close to buying one...
really, they are not too too flashy... maybe the pic makes it look too 'colorful' they are actually pretty cool. the guy i spoke to is the one who makes them.. he glues laminated colored wood together then cuts it and forms the cane.... i held it in my hand at the fair and KNEW i should have bought it..... i did not know id need it 2 months later....

Glad to hear all is going well John. Please keep us all informed!
I have a selfish reason... My dad will be scheduling the same surgery on Thursday (not sure when it will happen.)
He is 65 years old. Hope he can pull through it OK, and get some use of his knees back. He has not been real active lately, because of the knee thing. If he has to go any distance now, it's in a chair. I want him to get some mobility back so he can enjoy his retirement!
John, I have been in and out here lately, but the way I view threads here, I missed the one about your knee replacement. Hope all is well and glad you are getting out and about. I like the mardi gras cane.

I'm 53 now, I smashed my first knee at 25...made a quick T handle on a 2X2 to get around and used that for a couple months...when it became apparent I wasn't going to snap out of that, I decided I'd better make friends with canes... bent the good knee sideways at 35-ish...when they both act up I'm browsing the chair section on the web...a nice power chair is $5K.
but we're not there yet.
here's a home made-r I cvarved:

couple of mine:

the brown one is the main one, but when it gets bad, the grey one will get you around when you don't think you can...like I said, it takes the trauma off the wrist.
I'm sure you'll snap back to normal...but keep in the back of your mind those things tend to haunt you with age...and weather changes.
while you're out and about, keep an eye out for one of the good ones...gimps can't watch them 24 hours a day..and a couple steps ahead and they'll never catch you... :1287:

Glad to hear your on the way UP, John! :fing32:
The main cane I use started out life as part of a Hedge Tree (Osage Orange) in the 1860's. My Great Grandfather cut it and used it for a shovel handle until part of it was broken in 1973. My uncle then made it into a cane and gave it to me after my first knee surgery in 1986.

ROF Good to hear the knee is healing, John. Take care of the knee, and enjoy the "down time" while ya can. BTW- nice cane. It immediately put me in mind of the dude on Starsky & Hutch. ROF :hide:
