I pulled a pooch off of death row at the Ft. Campbell animal shelter last week while on a beer run. He has turned out to be a REALLY good dog. Very smart....... when I brought him home and let him explore the yard, whenever he got far enough, I would say NO! Max would immediately and dutifully stop and pee to mark the spot each time I said NO! Very attentive, follows me everywhere. Has the heart of a lion as he tries to chase the deer at night and growls whenever someone comes to the door. I estimate his age to be between 6 to 8 months old. Cost me $84 but that includes all of his shots for a year, a microchip, and getting neutered.

Wonderful news, and good looking guy, Chief. The rescues always seem to turn into such great dogs. How about more pics, next time more of him on his property...ROF

I still haven't quit figured out what breed he is. I am guessing shepard/chow mix or shepard/black lab. Anybody have any ideas on this? Max also knows how to say hello!

Good lookin' pup! Does he have webs between his toes? He does kind of look like he's got that retriever 'point' to the top of his head.

The reasone I was thinking maybe shepard/chow mix is that I pulled a HUGE amount of fur off of him. Especially his hind quarters. He had a real heavy thick winter coat. I am just real happy with him and he is real happy with me.

The muzzle, eye expression, the ears...all just say shepherd to my, Chief. Tommy III was a German Shepherd/Golden Lab mix...

Boy! Tommy III sure does look like the spittin' image of Fritz. He is the dog my wife rescued from the animal shelter death row. He is also a very good dog. Ole' Fritzee is getting grey in the snout and long in the tooth but is still a great watch dog. Max is his "trainee".

The absolute best pets I ever got were usually from the shelter, or a "free to good home " ad. Max is a very handsome dog, and I swear he is smiling in your first picture. Sounds like you got a good companion and he got a good home, a win-win situation!

Actually Max does smile. Our other dog Fritz smiles and shows all of his teeth. Many folks who don't know him, think he is viscious and get intimidated but he is really smiling. He rolls his lips up and shows the pearly whites but he is wagging his tail. I think Max picked it up from him.

Randy, I am going to say that he is a Lab-shephard mix from what I can tell with him. I amsure glad that got him as a rescue is a 2nd hand dog-first class love as he knows what almost happened to him. What ever breed I would recommend once you are permanently moved and settled in, to make a appointment with the vet and have the vet say what breed he thinks it is. I find mixed breeds to be the best as they generally do not have the problems that a pure breed have.

I am wondering about the white on his chest, Cows normally are one color, and sheps are like a tinted coat..I would lean toward the lab mix..Whatever, he looks like he will make a fine companion.. :fing02:

A lot of mixes with chow still wind up with a b lack / blue colored tongue or gums.......I would go with a lab/shepherd mix....................As to the thick hair etc you removed, German Shepherds ar enot called German Shedders for nothing. They are a p[erpetual shedding machine. I can get wads of hair off our GSD within days of each brushing. Labs are not that bad with shedding like a GSD is......

Yea, their usually holsteins, or a piebald for what we call an angus/hereford cross.......black cow white face.......and just how did we get switched to cows from dogs? ROF See what a little typo on a forum can lead to ROF

It's that Nuetered thing again, perhaps a set of Nuticals for his birthday would be good!

Dog's are mans best friend , your new (Good Looking Dog) MAX might want to vote on that though! No icons in the quick reply so just have to imagine a SMILE!!

It is a requirement to have them neutered when you adopt them from the animal shelter as is the microchip niether of which I wanted but it was that or no dog and you must sign a statement agreeing to it.

I got Tommy III at Animal Control his 3rd and last day....scheduled to be put down the next morning. I got him free (it was 3 days before Christmas) but they took him to my vet and had him fixed. I had to provide a name and they called to make the appointment...I could only pick him up after the fact. I really wish I could have had one of his kids...

Tommy IV was already fixed by the Rescue Kennel when I got him..., like Chief said, required. Kennel gets $125 donation per animal. They rescue any breed, but specialize in Louisiana Catahoula dogs. Based in Seattle, but they travel as far as Louisiana to bring back dogs.

I think Tommy IV is part Catahoula, or he spent too much time with his "buddies", cause he "talks" ALL the time....I've never had or seen a dog "talk" so much! Worse than my wife!

No, tongue looks normal. He did chew up my flip flops and dragged my socks out of my duffel bag yesterday. His first bit of mischief.

Nice looking family member you have there Chief. :fing02: I had a mixed Black lab/ Great Dane once. The best and most loyal dog i ever had. I wish he was still alive...he was a lot of fun to be around.

Now you have a buddy. Word of caution, from your discription of his actions when you say 'no', please don't tell him no in the house!

No accidents yet except for chewing up my flip flops and dragging out my socks. He does keep the floors clean and loves pizza!

Michael

Hey Randy, That dog really likes you to grab and run with your flip flops. The only is that is the most powerful smell from you and so he grabs that to have it close to him whenyou are not around. You might want to give him a old t-shirt you have been wearing near his bed so he can carry it around to remind him of you. Its just dog talk that he likes you....

I'll give that a try Micheal. Thanks!

Archdean

Here I thought I had it made till Michael tells Randy about the T shirt!!

My Dogs avoid all contact with my socks and underwear and in fact will take extra steps to walk around the things!!

Am I to take special note of this phenomenon !!

Any thoughts on this new revolation would be appreciated!

Michael

Dean my dog does the same thing but its a old sock with a hole in it that Rocky carries around when I am not home. I made sure I wore it for a day before I gave it to him or should I say laid it on his bed. Rocky does something funny with the sock in that he will bring it out of the bedroom and then roll on it after he sets it down. Some dogs have the strong desire to have their masters smell near them and others will avoid it. It all depends upon the dog. One other thing Randy is not to wash the t-shirt when you give it to the dog. :eck16:

Hey Randy I know your busy but hows Max doing with you guys?

Max is doing great and has quickly become part of the family. He is my little buddy and follows me everywhere I go. He likes riding with me in the truck too. I took him to the vet's this morning for his booster shots and to get neutered. I just got done calling the vet and they say he is doing well after the surgery and is wagging his tail. Just a little groggy. Max is an eating machine! Loves his table scraps and leftovers! :fing02:
