just whining here....
i decided i would be a smart arse and start to no longer use my walker and start using a can.......
yesterday morning i got up and tried to walk on my own along the wall (no cane)
i took one step and thought "great, no problem i can do this" took one more step and my knee totally let go, i did not hit the ground but landed against the wall... Oh my Frikken God!! it hurt so much i swear i was like sobbing in pain for 10 minutes unable to move... (not crying, but wow did it hurt)
what a dummy.... anyway i doubled up on my pain pills all day and did not do any damage (i hope) - just bent my knee a lot more that it was used to being bent....
physical therapist came by yesterday and he put the kibosh on my using a cane only.. he said not till 3 weeks. i doubt ill need to wait that long... but, i dont want to risk my knee letting go again.... (man, that was sore) so im back to looking like an old gribby walking with a walker....

Knee pain has to be one of the worst. Hope you take it easy and let things heal into place properly.
Seems like with a lot of injuries or repairs, a person starts feeling like it's better right before it's really done healing up. Hard to give it that little bit extra that it needs to proceed to the next level, but that's where you just have to resist the urge to push it too soon.
The thumbnail was enough. The full picture is painful.

When I saw the title "ouch!" I was a little afraid to open the thread!
You do realize that the doctors and therapists have been doing this for awhile and are telling you things for a reason, right? Don't rush things! Give it the time it needs to heal correctly! Might be the difference between having some frequent pain in the future and having none at all! Besides, do you really want them going back in to fix something your impatience caused? Sorry for the lecture!

Oh man the thought of it makes me shiver. You'll do fine. I have several friends who have knee replacements. They survived the frustration, I suspect you will also.

WHOA, big fella! I hate to :beatdeadh , but LISTEN TO THE DOCS! I figured I do it my way when I had surgery to remove shrapnel from my knee - ended up staying in the hospital 30 extra days due to a DVT (deep vein thobrosis - a blood clot from my ankle to my hip). Keep us up to date! DO WHAT THEY SAY AND DON'T DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU NOT TO DO!
Have fun with your Physical Torture! :hide:

Some lessons are learned the hard way. Maybe the pain got your attention and now you will liston to the Doc's.
Hope no real damage done and by Christmas you'll be ready to kick you heals up and be ready to PARTY.
Take it easy and get well.

That was not a very "SWIFT" move. :fing20: Sort of removes all doubt as to why no one has ever given you the nick-name "SWIFTY". ROF
I broke my ankle when I was stationed in Japan. I was a young guy (23) and the crutches were a pain in the a$$ so I disregarded the Doc's advice and just walked on the cast after about a week. "BAD MISTAKE"!!!! The frickin ankle never healed right and it gives me major trouble to this day.
Do what your Doc says and do what your PT guy/gal says!!! Once you get your staples out, you can play the Connect the Dot game on the scar. ROF

John ease up a bit. Oh course your body did it for you in telling you it still hurts. I bet just about every knee replacement person has done what you have done so you learn relly quick to follow doc orders.
I do know about that as I had the eardrum skin graft and was warned about the problem of potentially losing balance after a couple days (normal problem) I did not believe them and on the 2nd day after the operation, I hop out of bed and fell backwards back into the bed from the vertigo, after that I would slowly get up and sit on the edge of bed and let my body adjust and then get up the rest of the way (no where near the way your knee feels) We are all supermen until our bodies tell us B.S. you are mortal, BTW I had a motorcycle accident in 1983 and broke my right kneecap and tore my ACL after the repair operation I tryed the same thing and got the same reaction from my body.

:ditto: on what Sixchows said John , when I saw that "ouch" I was hesitant to open the thread too cause I figured you was hurting from the surgery and did something you regretted :fing20: . Can't blame you for trying though, would have did the same thing, my daughter is an RN and says I am the worst patient when it comes to listening to "doctors orders" . You take care now and at least try to do what you're told :).

I'd say that depends on whether the new knee came with batteries. ROF If it did, it begs the question - Did it come with a vibrator? ROF

Don't expect quick miracles. It's been almost 8 months since I dislocated my knee & it still aches by early afternoon. Oh well, at least it doesn't swell up any more.

Now SJ, I'm not going to chastize you as the other's have done or tell you not to over do as you now know your limits.... But I want to remind you of a very important detail for next Monday! Make sure you have the doctor SAVE THOSE STAPLES, they'll come in mighty handy out in the shop someday. Oh yeah, usually they take a new "staple remover" right out of the package, have him give it to you for the tool box. I'm still using the staples and remover tool from my mother in law's knee surgery every once in a while, they're a great substitute for tie wire...:D

Simple John, been there and done that, but it was after knee replacement and my knee looked just like that. I took the first step down the stairs leading with the wrong foot, and bent my knee more then 90 degrees . The pain took my breath away and I sat on the stairs for 20 minutes before things calmed down, I didn`t moved, I had 12 more that I could have fallen down, makes me sick just thinking about it. So listen to the people taken care of you. I had to learn how to walk all over again. Getting old isn`t for sissys. I wish you well.

Simple John:
What's your story on the knee?
If it was a replacement, which product did your orthopod put in you and why did they recommend that particular replacement?
I will have to go in for replacements as soon as I get my mothers needs taken care of.
I was told 6 months rehab time for one knee. What were you told?
Good luck!

not sure of the specific product they put in my knee... i recently noticed tv commercials for knee replacements but that was about 2 weeks after i'd had mine done...
as for rehab time: i was told 3-6 months for total recovery im at 2 months 1 week and my knee is doing great.. i have therapy for a few more weeks....
as for pain, its still sore but not bad... occasional throbs of pain... and therapy is tough lately... but i find myself walking and realizing at times there is NO pain at all... so overall im very happy...
FYI: my pt therapist told me it takes up to 6 months... but im sure it will be closer to 3 months for me...

Simple John it`s been a year now and I still can`t bend my knee more then 90 degrees. But like you say no real pain unless I try and bend it more then that. :tsk: I have a lawncare business and it`s just me, myself and I that run it. And man I tell you walking around on uneven ground at first, I felt like a new born trying to walk. ROF I`m still afraid of falling but it get better as time goes by. This fall while doing leaves I do a lot of walking and at first my leg would get tired but it got stronger as well. But I was doing one job walked down some stairs and felt a pain in my other knee. Got a floater and it felt like someone driving a ice pick into the joint. I was really bumded out I was feeling really good too. It`s been a couple of months now and I hope it`s ground up, I see my doctor on the 17th of this month and hope I can just get by with the 3 shoot deal to fix my knee, and not need to have it scoped or a new knee. The stuff is injected into the joint and it`s called Synvisc and I had that treatment done on the old knee and it was a big improvement but my old knee was really bad. So I hope it will work on my problem I`m having now. Just take one day at a time and the more walking you can do the better things will get. :fing32: Good luck. Ray

For what it's worth, Joe Nameth had both knees replaced and said if he had known how much LESS pain he was gonna have after, he would have done it years ago. I hope you continue to get better and stronger.

John, A co-worker had a partial knee replacement and he did ok until he got back to work after 3 months and then was hitting the painkiller meds. What he discovered is the fact that he was on a concrete surface all day and the pounding that he was doing was to much for the type of shoe he was using. He was using a good quality tennis shoe which just was not doing the job. After several of us got him trapped and told him get a real hiking/work comfort shoe. I highly reccommend that you go out and buy a good couple pair of Ecco brand shoes. They have the best support for foot and they are the most comfortable shoe I have ever had. They are expensive, I recently bought 2 pair and spent $400.00 for them but they are a investment for my feet and since I work in a industrail plant they are durable, My last pair I went 3 years and wore out the sole before I got new ones.
The co-worker is now off the pain meds completely and still has a slight limp but is able to navigate the day without pain. He bought the high top type of work shoes, they are slightly more expensive ($215.00) We got all ours at Nordstroms but they have on-line shoe places that sell them and the link below is what I have.

I don't want to you think I am selling anything but if something works for me I will state it and those Ecco shoes work great for me, After work when I was using tennis shoes my feet would ache and it got to the point that I went to my doctor and complained, his exam showed nothing wrong and told me about eccos and I am a happy camper with them.

Ray, thats tough... i dont mean to sound pessamistic... But if its been that long and you dont have the range of motion... you probably wont ever get it back... did they send you to therapy after it was done?
It was drilled into me the 1st 3 weeks.. range of motion was totally important...
again, im not meaning to sound negative... but id think you will have a tough time regaining that range a year later.... maybe you could talk to your doc about some sort of stretching exercises or maybe some PT to work on increasing the range of motion...
good luck... sorry to hear you did not get more motion out of it.. but im glad its not bothering you :fing32: Maybe you could slowly work on getting the range back? That was very painful for me in the beginning... id think after this long it would be more painful to you too.... maybe stretching each night and you could slowly regain that range... i was told its real important.. hope you can get it back..
michael thanks for the suggestions...
i wear these shoes... year round....
http://images.rei.com/media/25533.jpg
they are hiking boots... not that i do any hiking.. but they have really great ankle support and are great in helping me with balance and support...
ive been wearing hiking boots for 20 years now... love them.. even if they are a bit hot in the summer :fing20:

Yeah, John the shoes I was reccommending were a hiking shoe, only because I do alot of twisting, turning and bending and a boot would be to consricting for what I do. But the arch support and the protection from the daily pounding that the foot does to the knees are important.
I just wanted to make sure that your feet have all the support and protection for your "new" knee.
