My background in the early 1980's was Geophysical. A doodlebugger known to most and I produced the seismic maps of Leander North (Texas) used in searching for oil reserves. I purposely shot out the location of what was my father's land at the time where I live now. Most of the 14 acres is sitting on top of a 500-780' rock of limestone below that from 800'-2300' is an aquafer that is roughley the size of Missouri, but no oil!
The homeowners association spent $10K digging the well in 1977 at a depth of 770 ft. When going over the seismic data there was an aquaduct comming straight up like a Dr.Seuss' Chimney. This answer a question why everything was so green in one area of the land (where we put the garden). If we had the data in 1977 we could have dug a well 20 feet deep :fing20:

That reminds me of the first house I built. Originally from PA and the township I lived in was known for coal mining in the late 80's and early 90's. It was all underground and sinkholes in the woods were common. Before putting in a foundation, I had to have test holes dug to see where the shafts were. Apparently, miners used to start digging in the side of a ravine that was about 1/4 mile away. They would crawl on their hands and knees and dig the coal out and have it pulled on a cart between their legs. The tests showed the shafts were only 3 ft deep and anywhere from 30 to 40 feet down with mostly shale as a top layer. We simply put oversized steel reinforced footings in just in case. Never had a problem.

Can't imagine the kind of work that must have been.

I saw a story where something similar to that happened to a guy in South Dakota. He went out to his machine shed one morning, opened up the door and found his combine nose first in the ground. Another combine next to it was sinking. Had to get a crane (I think) to get them out. :omg:

My in-laws car was parked in there front yard and the next morning the nose was pointing up ROF The city water line had been leaking for a while and cause a big hole under the ground and the weight of the car made it give way.

A friend was mowing his big back yard, when suddenly, the ground gave way, and soon he was setting inside a coal mine shaft!
The shaft was only 4 foot below ground level! We could see the timbers holding up the ceiling of the shaft. Looked very old and rotten. Couldn't see either end of it! Don't know how old it is, but its still under the part that didn't cave in! He filled the hole with dirt and brush. Then he sold the place, and moved to Florida! Our Borough maps don't show it, don't know about the county maps.

Did any really look at the pictures. Its faked. Look the top cab is even with the ground. The ground would several feet further back from the hood of the tractor. It would have never gone straight down. It would have gone in on an angle.

The picture of the trackhoe pulling out is so fake. First thats a 3' or 4' wide pivoting grading bucket on a 20,000 lb trackhoe. Some how the bucket is the same size as the tractor.
