i had a friend bring me a used car he just bought so i could redo his brakes well when i got in there to replace the pads the right rotor had groves cut in it so i rented a on car rotor lathe and got the rotor smooth again and the the caliper was cloged up so i cleaned it out and i had to reshape the piston and replace the dust boot. so after all that i got the brake pads back on but then the master cylander was not responding so i had to pull it and that little snap ring when accross the shop(now i see why wingnut calls them jesus clips)and i pulled the pistons and there wass about 2inches of dirt cloging the second piston so after 45 mineuts of cleaning it out i got it working again but then the brake booster wasnt working lukily it was just unhooked so after 4 days and 98$ i got is brakes working like new. one thing i learned from this is that ford explores suck im damn sure never gunna buy one.

I got a 96 explorer... Yeah its kinda a piece but its been through a lot.. We bought it in 96 and have driven in all over this state as we used it for our hockey vehicle for 3 kids driving all over. Alot of the miles on there are from those trips going to hockey games. It may make funny noises now but it has never left me stranded...

If you can't hear those "funny noises" over the radio, then there is nothing to worry about. :fing32:

Dan, I have found the same condition on several Explorers and Rangers over the years and it is not unusual because folks generally never change their brake fluid that often. Fords seem to more senitive to this then other makes and need to have the fluild changed at least once every 1 to 2 years. I just plain don't even rebuild calipers anymore as new ones are just about as cheap as me rebuilding them.
Every model and make has some things that just drive owners mad. I know one thing for sure even I have had problems with Chrysler vehicles that would make even me mad at Chrysler, Just try to do a engine rebuild on a 2.7 liter Dodge Intrepid engine. The cost alone for parts is over $3,500.00. I know thats what it would have cost me for the Intrepid if I decided to rebuild the engine. I decided to sell it at Auction last weekend (I got $1500.00). The engine was going on it with a blown head gasket and bad valve seals. I did some investigating and decided that even if I liked the cars ride and comfort I was not going to spend that much money and to wash my hands of it. For me I am on the hunt for a simplier car for driving to work and find something later on.

'91 Explorer - 175,000 miles with nothing but brake pads and rotors, fan clutch (2) and two fans, and a starter after I wet it good in a creek. Swapped in a later engine over a Thanksgiving holiday and I took it to 230K miles before I traded it in on a Tahoe.
I had NO complaints other than that the front brakes were too small and wore out faster than they should. Maybe your's is from a very humid or wet climate. If so, brake fluid should be a maintenance item. Its probably never been changed in 13 years. I wouldn't dis' a whole vehicle line over someone's lack of maintenance.
