Well it seems Mr Larson has kept his word and sent the new :"Restoration Series Tractor & Implement Paint System" from Valspar.

The product information and color card states "Restoration Series Tractor and Implement Finish is an automotive quality enamel designed for restoring classic tractors and implements to display conditions", and so far offer 8 colors only - JD Green, JD Yellow, IH Red, MF Red, Ford Red, Ford Blue, Ford Grey and AC Orange. I must admit that they were generous with the amounts and shipped a small pallet of the material, wavered the hazmat fee, shipping and of course, the material costs.

Now I have to find something worthy of painting...as the shop is suffering from empty nest syndrome.

Regards, Mark

BTW: If anyone is interested or curious, this is what the packaging looks like sitting on the shop floor :).

Mark, you didn't need to order all that paint just to paint my sheet metal. :dancingpa

Paul...yea, maybe too much. I noticed they had allot of the early primary Ford colors...didn't get any of those for some reason.
I'am not greedy either, if someone would like to try something let me know (shipping would be a nightmare though).

Mickey, drop it off tomorrow and I'll start on it that afternoon.....:)

Mark , Did they say what a gallon of that paint costs in the store? And a gallon would paint how many tractors?

Durwood,

They (Valspar) and the powers that be are all acting very mysteriously. I asked many questions during our e-mail and phone conversations and received very few answers. Not that they didn't know, just wouldn't say. They did state that John Deere and Valspar are now under contract and currently using this paint system on their new tractors at the factories. Which models, factories and their locations, again, they wouldn't comment. John Deere's results did encourage the company to support their dealers with factory packs, which would make it available to the public. And that is most probably why the sent out product test packages (like the one sitting on my shop floor) to support their claims of ease of application, color holdout, fast drying and cure rates...etc.

So the short answer is, it's not available in stores yet.

I haven't even opened or sniffed a paint can yet, but I can tell you for sure that it is a very high solids enamel (the paint is very heavy). I would think that a gallon will cover two complete large tractors, or three SCUT's - CUT's. A reduced and catalyzed gallon of paint usually produces about 6 quarts of sprayable material....that's allot of paint.

Approximate costs:
Gallon-Paint $40
Gallon-Reducer/Thinner $20
Pint-Hardener/Catalyst $19
Gallon-Primer (??) probably close to the cost of the paint?

BTW: Everything above is as reported to me. If it is as good as they say I will let you know, and if it's crap I'll do the same.

Thanks Mark. So does this mean that all future restored Yanmars will be green and yellow? :trink40:

Nah...There are a couple of dealers that do that and it just isn't right. Their intent is to pass a Yanmar off as a JD. Same people tell them that you can get parts at any John Deere dealership :tsk: . And it kind of taints the honest grey market dealer.

How about a JD green & yellow refrigerator?? My dog's dog house needs paint too. Maybe a nice IH Red?

The only tractor I have that needs paint is my MF. Maybe this winter when it starts to get really wet, I'll pull it in the shop and give it a once over.

The Valspar Restoration Series paint is now stocked in my local Blain's Farm & Fleet!! Looks really nice on the paint chip card. I guess they too are recognizing that there is money to be made catering to this group of nutcases.Too bad they don't have Bolens. :banghead3

Wow...Didn't know it was going to hit the market so soon. My last conversation with Valspar's Rep said it would be '06 before it was available, and John Deere is supposed to have the factory packs first. So if it's at your Farm & Fleet, it's probably at TSC and most JD dealerships.

Yeah, too bad about Bolens and many other vintage colors not available, but my original inquiries were about clear coating the BPS and mixing stations for the new product line. If I were able to acquire a mixing station (scales, toners and mixing paddles), with the original paint formulas, one could mix any color out there. Big IF and big investment unless your painting something every other day.
