View Full Version : dk65 won't crank over

My dk65 ran fine last time out. With a full charge on the battery and the clutch depressed I hear a pop noise when I turn the key but the engine will not turn over. I have power to the starter as it will activate when I jump the terminals. Is there a solenoid or relay under the dash? I think this is where I hear the pop sound when I try the key and depress the clutch. The engine will not turn over at all. The lights and radio both work, just no power getting to the starter. Any ideas welcomed.

Welcome aboard kalmack.
I'm not sure on the specifics on your model but that "popping" sound could be a loose connection somewhere, a high amp connection.
I'd recommend to trace the high current battery leads and make sure their connections are clean & tight. Bad grounds are known to cause these types of problems, same with a loose/corroded "hot" lead.
Good luck and let us know.

Dave may have hit it...Sounds like a connection problem..
Let us know what you find. :goodl:

Battery and terminals hot and clean. Lights work. I turn the key and hear a click in the dash. I depress the clutch and hear another click, but engine won't turn over. I jump the starter and the engine turns over. Am I overlooking a relay somewhere or who's is good to repair in the Denton area?

Does it have a water saftey switch on the fuel filter?

Great suggestion, Walter. I'll look.
Thanks very much.

There isn't any wiring to the fuel filter leading me to believe it does not have a water sensor built in. I believe that a safety switch SOMEWHERE is preventing it from cranking. Other than the clutch safety switch what am I overlooking?

When you jumped the terminals did it smoke? Neutral saftey switch in transmission. Is there a fuseable link.

I jumped the terminals on the starter just long enough to crank it a few revolutions, so did not see any smoke. With the key fully turned to the right (and hear a click) and clutch depressed (and hear a click under dash) I have shifted through the gears and used all the cabin controls but still no crank. I am not sure about where a fusible link might be located. My manual is buried SOMEWHERE after a recent move. Thanks for your ideas.

The noise under the dash should be from the glowplugs .Does the fuel solenoid on the fuel pump make any noise or been checked for energy

I haven't checked the fuel pump yet. Would a fuel pump problem keep it from simply cranking over?
Thanks for your input!

Without power at the injector pump selinoid it will not allow fuel to be used .check for power to the connections .if it does not have power check the relays.

Hey Walter. Thanks for trying to help out. I will check out power to the injector pump. Are the relays usually in the engine compartment or elsewhere? I only get out to the tractor every few weeks, so it takes me a while.
Wouldn't the engine crank ( not start but turn over) even if the fuel supply was defective?

No what theis switch does is cut off fuel .With a defective switch or solenoid will not allow feul to pass .I dont know if the solenoid is internal or external on your engine .

I think I need to figure out how to get it to turn over first of all.

Does your tractor have a fuse box any where under the hood ?

I have checked the fuse box located under the dash in the cabin and all fuses are OK. Is there another safety switch other than the clutch pedal? Thanks for helping.

Is there a neutral switch on range selector .on your fuse panel theres a relay for the pto.

Make sure your PTO is not switched on..
If that don't work go out and remove the battery ground wire from the frame of the tractor clean the frame and ground wire and then see if it fires.

HI there are several safty switches and the newer the tractor the more switches this time of year if equipt the seat gets hard because of cold not leting the switch engage next pto switch some are located in bad sports my masey ferg is right near the left pant leg getting me several times next neutral switch and clutch switch some times I'm not sure on yours if you turn the key on and go to each one of these switches one at a time you can here them engage if one does not there's your problem If this does not work you have to check for power from the starter selonid all thhe way to the key switch . if every thing is fine then look for power to the key switch if no power then its one of those safty switches you can jump this but be carefull they don't call tem safty switches for nothing . Ill bet it's the seat I just wanted to give you the hole pitcher

take the battery cables off and clean them even though they look clean, won't hurt nothing.

Finally found the problem. RATS were under the cab floorboard and chewed through 5 wires. Had to loosen all the connections in the engine compartment to get slack to repair the wires. She fired right up.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
