How much UTV do you need?

We tried to decide for a long time on our small farm what would we get? Had a four wheeler atv that the carb would gum up every time we turned around and that was so annoying. One day a guy said I'll trade you my golf cart with new batteries and charger for your four wheeler. Well we spent $2k buying it and when we couldnt fix carb it was a shop bill. I said sure. Its been love ever since. We used this electric golf cart more in 3 months than we did that four wheeler in 3 years. It really needs some tlc now. The right rear passanger spring has actaully started to reverse arc from the abuse we put this thing through. Almost all the bushings are gone. Only thing we ever did to it was break off the roof, replace an occasional corroded wire, and charge it.

I will say it cost us about $2k. Still way cheaper than one of those $15,000 dollar new UTVs that I really want. Or even a good used one at $6k+. We have had this thing in ditches, mud, water over the floor board, etc. Never stops. When the it is time to replace it and that time is coming sooner than later I really think we will get another, but maybe with a lift kit.

You really be surprised of what they can do. It is not something you are going to go flying up and down the trails with, but a work horse YES. I have seen some fuel powered four wheel drive ones where you had the option of mechanical front axle or electric front axle. Guess the electric would be nice if the motor went out. I think if we dont get another golf cart we will get a Kubota RTV.

My brother-in-law used a 2-cycle gas engine golf cart for many years on his farm. He bought it used from a golf club for a few hundred dollars and used it and abused it until it literally fell apart after about 10 years. Both his daughters learned to drive on it. He added tool boxes to the rear of it. He eventually did put a lift kit on it and knobby tires. I am currently looking at possibly getting some sort of an electric cart for myself for outdoor use, as I don't walk well or far anymore. New battery technology has made a huge difference in the performance (speed AND range) of electric UTVs, motor assisted bicycles, scooters, etc.

When the batteries was new we would go about 2 weeks with out charging it. Now we have to charge every few days. My Uncle has one and tried to save a few bucks when the trojan batteries went out and bought interstate deep cycle. He said big mistake should have bought trojan again. One hug advantage is they are a lot quieter than a fuel powered vehicle. So Yes I agree battery technology is awesome now.

Golf carts are awesome I love them Ive done all kinds of stuff to ours. i built a tow hitch for it and it tows over 1,200lbs regularly up and down hills I take it in the mud and snow. One thing of advice its not as good at jumping as these newer Gators boy my back hurt from that. I do wish it was faster and had 4wd though and there are times when I wish it had a roll bar and seat belts.

They are fun. Not like having a quad and zippin trails though. Golf carts are tough though. I really like the club car suspension and especially the after market lift kits for them versus the rest, but do not like the aluminium frame. Ours has a couple of breaks that I dont believe effect the structure. To me aluminium will stretch before steel and break. Again the lifts for these are awesome. I have been on some EZ GO carts and with the front leaf springs I dont like the way it turns in the corners. Feels like a lot of body roll.

If I went UTV I think it be a Kubota RTV.

Another good addition to this unit was the Lights I added after the wife ran it through the trees ripping the roof off. I bought them because we needed them and she had a milk cow at the time and would go out in the dark every morning to milk the cow. Those things are awesome Only cost me $12 each. One time I got caught doing a job here on the farm in the dark. I must have ran them lights for 3 or 4 hours and the digital gauge I installed to meter the battery usage on the cart didnt even go down. Amazing. Here is a link if interested. http://amzn.to/2r0GqXs
