Default 1/2" shank trailer hitch ball?

The hole in the rear plate of my mower is too small for a 5/8" shank 1-7/8" trailer ball. I haven't measured, but assume it would accept a 1/2" shank trailer ball. I want to be able to pull around a small landscape trailer in the yard.

Anyone know where I could find a 1/2" shank ball? I've looked all over the net and local stores with no luck. Maybe nobody makes them, though a couple of people did tell me they thought that some motorcycle trailer hitches use a 1/2" shank ball.

I don't want to just drill out my rear plate since the existing hole has rounded edges giving it some strength.

Thanks.

I ran into the same problem on an older Simplicity I had. I made a short extension bar about 4" long with a 1/2" hole on one end and a larger(I think 3/4") hole on the other. I just bolted it on tight and never had a problem.

Never seen a ball with that small of a stud.
I would get the one you need and turn it down and re/thread to the size you want.
If you can find one that accepts a bolt (female ball) you could get a heli-coil to reduce to 1/2-13 or 20 thread.

Here are three items that may be better for your needs than make the hole bigger for a ball. I would go with the 2 inch Receiver hitch With insert.

Here is a picture of what I made for my tractor. I needed a lower hitch. I can pull my trailer or lawn sweeper.

I would leary of bolting on one of those from ebay. The additional reach would create extra leverage on the exsiting tractor hitch. It might bend it if you have too much tongue weight.

Thanks for the replies.

I may just have a friend make a short extension like chrpmaster did - sort of like the 2nd ebay option posted by Sirwin.

If you could find the type that take a carrage bolt. You could use a 1/2 inch bolt instead of the 5/8. If you wanted you could put a bushing in but I don't think it would be necessary for a garden tractor with a yard trailer.

It does. I had to weld a plate on my LX and make the area thicker to work. I never had a lot of weight on it.

I have one, but I can't for the life of me remember where I got it. I thought Northern Tool but I don't see it in there current catalog. It will come to me out of the blue.

Dan

On second thought I must have a 5/8 shank on mine. I see Tractor Supply has one in their catalog for $11.55. I would drill it out, another 1/8 in. isn't going to make that much difference.

mounted a 2" ball onto a piece of 1/4" plate and made two brackets that hang off part of the rear bagger frame on my LT180.

I have a very old one that came off a 60's Cub Cadet- maybe they sold 'em back then.

All yard mowers are designed with a 1/2 inch hole so we won't put a real trailer ball in them to overload our mowing machines that are designed to mow grass..

Mr Jimi If you have a GT it's designed to do a lot more than mow grass.
