john deere a trans fluid?

got a 1952 styled A. im wanting to replace the trans fluid but the (old) book says use 140wt about 32 degrees (and 80 wt below 32) that seems REALLY thick! i was thinking 80/90 or even 85/140. anybody have any experiance with this? thanks

Re: john deere a trans fluid?

85/140 is 140wt. that has extra additives to make it run thinner like 85wt at colder temperatures, so 85/140 should be fine in all temperature ranges. Multi-weight oils weren't available back when that tractor was made, so the people that created the specs for the tractor and wrote the manual didn't know such a type of oil was even possible.

I agree with Nouveau.
I work for a lubricant company and that is right on the money. We are running an 85w-140 gear oil in our "B" and it's doing fine.

Even though most machenery isn't used in the winter, we use 85/140 in all our older gear boxes that require 140 with no problems. The newer oils are far superior than the old blends. JMHO. PJ
