increase ground speed on a variable drive trans?

I inherited a huskee 24 hp with variable drive rear end, and it mows slower than I walk. The long drive belt has been replaced several times but the short belt that pulls the variable drive has not, is original. Could it be stretched out enough to make it not function properly on the variable drive, not make it expand all the way out?

Other than ground speed, I really like this mower on big yards, it has about a 54 inch cut and is very comfy to ride.

I have a tractor with same set up I have read to always replace both belts at the same time. Also are you using genuine belts because the belts are very size sensitive. Good luck

There is also a way to add more tension from pedal to long belt which will also add some speed. It is under tractor in middle on my MTD HUSKEE

For those to operate properly they need genuine MTD belrts and both new ones replaced at the same time. You also need to make sure the center sheave on the pulley is nice and free and slides up and down with no resistance.
Common problems if the belts are not MTD and both replaced are slow ground speed and jerky engagement.

The reason it doesn't tighten the belt enough is that the two belts are worn and the inside circumference is larger effectively making the belts longer.
Some of them had a threaded rod that adjusted how far the pulley assembly moved but eventually you will be out of room.
I don't skimp or band aid in this area. MTDs get two new MTD belts then I adjust from there as needed.

I'm confused by "I think that pushing the pedal does not tighten the belt enough,"
On a vari drive pushing the pedal does not tighten a belt. In fact when pushed enough it's loosens the front belt enough that it no longer turns the vari-drive pulley so that you can stop moving. When not fully pushed both belts should be tight but the drive ratios of each will depend on the position of the centre sheave which will move as pedal is moved.
Do you have the model number of the tractor?
You haven't mentioned the speed control lever so I am wondering if you have the vari-drive system that I'm (and others maybe) thinking that you have.

Brake was a larger pedal above the gas pedal but still on the right side just up higher.
Still a double sheave pulley or vari-pulley design.
I think the CVT name is used for ones like the new General rs800.
Some after just marketing names. Like auto, auto pedal drive, twin touch hydro.
The troy bilts with double pulley do have the f/n/r selector. Only the hydro trans on some older MTDs that were on the right fender and the new newer xp and xt ones with rocker style pedals are without the selector.
