Re: John Deere 655, 755, 855, 955 series
I recently had an issue with my 955 where the unit would not crank. I reviewed the wiring diagram and determined that this had to be an issue with the neutral safety switch.
The neutral safety switch bracket and wiring harness is underneath the center panel just in front of the seat, so I removed the center panel, disconnected the harness and jumpered across the connections and sure enough my tractor started right up. I took this opportunity to drive the tractor to the garage where it would be much easier to work on.
I ordered the new switch and proceeded to take the center section of the tractor apart to replace it. Once you have the center panel off, and the shift level panel off there are only two more items to remove, the linkage to the pedals (1 bolt), and the retaining bolt for the neutral safety switch bracket (1 bolt).
I have included a picture of this bracket. You can see that the old switch was actually broken in half. Also note the spacer underneath of the switch assembly. This spacer is required to ensure the proper alignment of the neutral safety switch with the roller that presses on the switch.
The total time to remove all panels, replace the switch and have everything reassembled, about 2 hours.
