Kohler K321 rebuild questions

I am in the process of rebuilding the K321 in my '73 JD 140H3. It was smoking so I sent it to the machine shop. New valves and guides and 0.010" over and polished crank and I just picked it up. The machinist did a pretty good job cleaning it after machining, but I decided that I wanted to clean the main bearings even more rather than trust the machinist. I pulled the cam and got the bearings out and they were a little rough turning due to machining particles so I cleaned them thoroughly and now they roll nice and smooth again. My question is this- if I lay the bearings down flat on the table, the inner race has a little bit of play vertically to the outer race if that makes sense. How much play is normal? Is it worn or is that normal to have a little play there? There is no play in the other direction as if I were trying to move the races towards each other. No play at all, but there is a little the other direction as I was saying. If I installed them would it give the crank endplay or is that even possible? I know most people do not replace them and I don't want to have too but I will if it is needed. -Nick

These big ball gearings also act as thrust bearings, so some side ot side wear is normal, As to how much play is acceptable..i dunno, never had one bad enough to send up any red flags so far.

Well we did the best we could and checked them with a dial indicator. It looks to be 0.003"-0.004" for one bearing and 0.004"-0.005" for the other. It feels like a lot, but apparently its not. At least that doesn't seem like a lot to me, maybe someone could check some that they have?

On a different note, is there anything I need to check out with the governor gear before assembly?

Thanks for the link, I was actually using the manual to remove the camshaft and it didn't even dawn on me to check it for bearing specs. It is actually very vague with these bearings though. Just says do not replace unless they are out of running specifications. Does not say what those are. I think they are probably just fine. Unless I can find them super cheap, they will get reused. The manual did say to check the governor gear for wear, chipping or cracking teeth; if they are absent, it is fine. Thanks for your help Red and WNY! -Nick

3-4 thousandths is pretty tight in my book..

**Is is the measurement vertical or horizontal to the C/shaft's axis?

You don't want the crankshaft pushing on the crank-case, bearing mounts rod & piston pin (thus the piston).. If I remember right the manual lists crank clearances in the specifications charts in the manual. If it's loose you can install shims.. Take a look there..

So it says crankshaft endplay for a K321 is 0.003"-0.020" if that clearance is coming from the bearings, it is still in spec?

Another interesting thing I found, each bearing were different brands, meaning someone must have replaced one at some point. That tells me that since they both have about the same wear, they must have a couple thousandths when new?

You have to have some clearance between the balls and the races for the oil film, when the motor is running and the bearings are full of oil it takes up the clearance. This is the same concept as journal bearings and why they need clearance.
