For me, any notice at all would have been nice. Never got an email at all, just checked spam. First "Remember me" stopped working, then I couldn't log in at all, it left me scratching my head all night. Finally shrugged and used "forgot password" where this thread was referenced. Not the end of the world, but did make for some confusion and inconvenience.

Perhaps a longer lasting and more prominent posting like the contest announcement stickies at the top of each sub-forum would be in order if there is a next time.

1. What is the rationale for resetting all the passwords? Has this site been hacked? To what are we responding?

2. I run my site's mail and web services, and ran through the Sendmail logs for the past couple of days. No sign of any attempt to send mail from your site to my site. Looks to me as though notification e-mails may have been blocked at your originating site, not downstream.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

Not to complain about the mods, they were probably "mushroomed" almost as the rest of us. VerticalScope could have provided MTF with sufficient warning such that the MTF members could have been notified of the global password change well in advance. Like maybe starting last week there could have been a banner on all forum pages warning of the change. Very poorly handled on their part.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

Yes, we were. I tried logging in several times this morning before maxing out my attempts...twice. I finally began thinking that I had suddenly gone senile, and began trying variables of my password, thinking that it was me.

All is well now though. I received my temporary password within moments of following the "forgot my password" link.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

Very, very, very poorly planned and executed. No reason for any of this to happen.

When I couldn't get in earlier and wasn't getting the reset emails, I realized you had probably triggered spam filters all over the web and were probably blacklisted. Sending out a mass email about password resets is just begging to be blacklisted. It's one of the key Spam methods.

There should have been more notice and the emails should have been sent out in batches of a few hundred at a time.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

I have no idea what 'VS' is, but if they can't handle such a simple task, they don't need to be in the business. I sure hope MTF isn't paying them anything.

The second result when I googled VerticalScope was this: 45m passwords stolen from over 1,100 VerticalScope forums

Hope we are all not reusing username/password combos. Not sure why a breech in February created such urgency that we all got slammed without warning like this.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

Phew, I'm back! Here is what I have found. Sorry, I couldn't post this earlier.

June 15, Softpedia (International) Hacker steals 45 million records from 1,100 home, sports and tech support forums. VerticalScope.com reported that its system was compromised in February after a hacker stole over 45 million user records from its database which contained details from over 1,100 tech, home, and sport support portals.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

I had to weaken my password with the 10 character limit, I have been using the MAX number of characters allowed and saving them in LastPass for years so this is a downgrade in security as far as I am concerned.

As said earlier, we were all hit with this at once with the same notice time. VS stands for VerticalScope, the owner of the forum.

BTW, if there are any members reading this looking for help and are still locked out, you can drop me an email at mtf.admndjinwv@gmail.com and I'll reset your password for you.

Thanks DJ, it looks like a lot of sites were affected. I couldn't reset mine till I got home, but was following along. My password was from the early years when hacking was rare, and (like a dummy) I used it for tractor related sites where I order parts, and other forums. I was busy today.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

^^ One reason I never use the same ID or contact details on different sites. I probably have 20 or more email addresses and some are used for only one site.

Re: Attention - Password and Security Update

This is stupid, I'm fed up with all these security changes every where.

As for VS and MTF, I will not be a supporter ever again. I was considering it again since my internet access situation has changed. I may even leave all together. Since VS has taken over I've seen more negative changes than good. this once booming forums is left to die with a "one size fits all" attitude. I'm not the only one who has said this, but I'll be the first to throw it out for all to see!

I was so fed up years ago I created my own website for sears garden tractors with a forum, downloads etc... It far surpassed what MTF had to offer and it still does. Link in my signature.

VS punishes us by increasing our password security when they are the ones who were hacked, not us!

Thanks DJ for bailing me out. I did not receive any notification email, and the Forgot my Password didn't work as it did not recognize my email address, and using the "Contact US" didn't work either.

Once I finally got the assist from DJ, and on the page where I was changing to a password of my choosing I found at least a part of my problem was that my registered email was listed as a long abandoned email provide by an ISP I've not used in many many years. I guess MTF uses different email addresses for notification of PM's, thread subscriptions, ... because I get all of them.

In any event, I won't contribute my own thoughts on how this password change was implemented, but I will take another second to:

Thank DJ for offereing and fulfilling an assist.
