Hi,

I've been asked to help sell a 1949 Gravely Model L as part of an estate. Serial # is 78037. It was restored at one point and is said to function properly. Can someone lead me to where I can find out what the value is on these machines? He also has another model L with a lower serial number of 18639. Any help would be appreciated!

Pictures would help alot. But that serial number is not for a 1949. It would be a 1953. The later one you listed is a 1946. The 46 should have a brass tag. Depending on condition, the 53 might go for around $250. It all depends on location too. As you are in CA, they would go for more there as there weren't many sold in CA.

Gravely Mower, Model L, Serial #15157, Brass tag, wooden control handles, believed to be 1945 model. New shaft in mower. 1 new tire. Running when parked. Too many projects! I can load - You haul. Cash Only! Call Carl 706-455-0492.

Unfortunately, it looks like Morganton is waayyy the heck out in the middle of nowhere - somewhere up in the mountains, near the NC border, with no interstate highways anywhere near it.

I'm guessing that it would be a long, grueling drive for this Gravely rescue.

Well, it's three months later, and he's slashed the price, to $175 [assuming that isn't a typo]:

Here's another handsome "L", in Georgia:

Gravely model L two wheel walk behind tractor, 1958 - $400 (Gainesville, Ga)

Gravely model L two wheel walk behind tractor # SR-3126

This is a used 1958 Gravely Custom Convertible tractor. Has been sitting since last fall when I serviced the engine and was running good, I haven,t started it this year. I purchased it a couple of years ago and have never had the time to do anything to it. The tires have weather cracks and some rust on it. Pull start engine, It would need a starter kit to have electric start. This is a 4 speed tractor and would make a very good garden or mowing tractor. I,am not sure what the plow is called on the front but one of the guide wheels was seized up and needs some work.

As the crow flies, Gainesville is not all that far from Morganton, but it has much better interstate access, via I-985:

There's an affordable "L" up in Maryland right now:

Old Gravely Walk Behind Tractor - $200 (Rockville)

But Rockville is about 4.5 hours away [in the best traffic], for about 9 hours total, and I burn about 4 to 5 gallons per hour [15 to 12 miles per gallon; travelling at 60 MPH], so I would be looking at anywhere from

[4 gallons per hour] X [9 hours] X [$4 per gallon] = $144 in gas

to

[5 gallons per hour] X [9 hours] X [$4 per gallon] = $180 in gas

And then suddenly it isn't such a good deal anymore.

I was actually thinking about starting a new thread concerning the price of gasoline and the Gravely Rescue Road-Trip.

That would be a good one for Ron to pick up and tell Lindey is for me. I bet she'd buy that. :D Note the control levers are on the ground.

I'll pass as the gasoline cost would raise it to more than I can get one ( or more ) in WV for and not have a daylong drive involved.

600 miles / 12 MPG = 50 gallons X $4 = $200 + $200 = $400 vs $350 at a place I'm going to be and a running tractor to boot.

Let's see, Rockville is 15 miles away. So 30 miles at 15 mpg would be 2 gallons at 3.75 equals $7.50. 30 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on what time I go there.
I doubt Lindey would notice it. It will blend in nicely with the other 20 something non-running L's that I have.

Besides Don, she's waiting for you to come pickup the other couple of tractors that I told her were yours.
