Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

Starting to get it cleaned up and I'm going to fix the original Robin Subaru 20.5hp engine and reinstall it. The 22hp predator engine will be for sale after I get it off.

Installed the front drive attachment brackets and starting to install the steering brakes. Pedals are done going to work on the hubs this weekend.

Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

what's the story with the Subaru engine? Why would the PO replace it but not throw it away?

Things that make me go hmmm....

Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

The original Robin Subaru 20.5hp had a valve guide drop out of the head. These are first design heads. They have a second design head. The PO took the head to get it fixed and because of the time and needing to use it he bought the new Predator engine. He later advertised the Robin Subaru with adapter plate for sale. I wanted the adapter plate. Checked and he lived close to my brother in PA. So I had my brother go pick it up. When my brother brought the motor to me at the 2016 Mow-in and started telling me about the 20G and said it looked different! I tried to describe the later oval decals and finally said "was it black" brother said yeah. I could believe that I had a motor off a 85th. So later I started contacting the PO and after several months I finally got the tractor. It's very clean with only 423 hours. It's a shame it was used but if it hadn't been I would have never got it. I'm going to get it cleaned up and back to original as best as I can. But will be adding a few accessories. The front drive kit and steering brakes and hand lever fwd rev kit. I'll keep all the original parts. I've got the head at the machine shop now. If it cannot be fixed I'll get a new head. Looking for a pair of original style turf chief tires 23-10.50x 12

Great to see this make it onto mtf

Actually I have a robin twin with the same issue sitting in the tent garage. Guy bought a brand new motor another robin and we kept the old one. Missing the shrouds, adatper plate and gear ect but otherwise ran when removed.

A someday project for me

Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

The machine shop said they should be able to knurl the guide and put it back in. The adapter plate is what is hard to find. But I think Bruce is making them for all those Robin Subaru 28hp EFI repowers. The new exhaust is going to be hard to get next. I think k it's only a few left in stock.

Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

Congratulations! Great buy, and story. I read your first post earlier this morning, and spent about 10 minutes scrolling back and forth through your pics. I started wondering how you came across this tractor and was going to ask you.

I can imagine how surprised you were when you realized that your brother was describing an anniversary tractor, and then the excitement when the owner finally agreed to sell it. It looks new too, and a keeper for sure.

Re: Gravely 85th anniversary edition 20G

I noticed the Predator had a oil cooler. Was the electric start hooked up on that engine, as it appeared to have its own key start also?

I wonder why the rear hitch plate was swapped out. Doesn't appear there would have been clearance issues.
