2000 diesel hasn't run in a year, What am I getting into?

Hi,
I am new to the tractor world. I have 4-6 acres to mow and a 500 yard long driveway to maintain and remove snow from. I have a chance to pickup a 1976 ford 2000 diesel with flail mower, box plow, and scoop for $2900. The thing is that it has not run in a year. The old man that owned it passed away and it has been parked in a barn for the last year. What am I getting into here? I figure: Drain fuel, flush tank with kerosene, disconnect fuel lines and blow them out, change filters, new battery and then try to start her up. I would also go through and check and change all of the other fluids. How hard should it be to get this running? Is there anything else I need to worry about fixing because it sat for a year? Is this the right choice of tractor for my needs? I would like a bucket, but finding a decent tractor with a bucket for under $4000 is not easy. Thanks in advance for your help.

Shouldn't be to hard. Our gas 3000 sat for almost 8 years with the tranny cover off. The only problem I'm guessing is that a value got stuck possibly.

You are planning on doing a lot more than I would. I'd top up the tank with fresh diesel, new filters, charge up the existing battery, check the oil and hit the key. A year is not an especially long time for a diesel engine to sit.

Unless you have reason to suspect the current battery is no good, put it on a small trickle charge, 2amps, for a few days until it is fully charged up. Could save you quite a few bucks over the price of a new one.

Down the road you could keep your eyes open for a used loader that you could add.

Unlike gasoline, diesel is quite stable, and the injection system is closed. I wouldn't expect any trouble from the fuel system after only 1 year.
Cylinder rust are more of a worry, but you said it's been inside so that should be ok; just check the oil, charge it up, and it will in all likelihood be fine.

Nice score.
