I am borrowing a TC30 while my 8N is being repaired. The guy I borrowed it from just bought it and has never used it, only told me it ran good and was on a trailer and to come pick up.

I did.

I ran it and immediately the temperature gauge shot into the red. Way into the red. So I stopped it and after a minute took off the radiator cap. Only heard a slight release of pressure. The fluid was not steaming and did not seem too hot.

So I ran it some more and it again went into the red, and then pinned all the way up. All the while the tractor ran just fine.

When I stopped and checked the radiator, same thing, not that hot. It was not boiling over or anything like you'd expect from an overheated engine.

Thoughts? Thermostat?

Thanks,

DW

Yes I would be looking at the Tstat first. Also make sure the Tstat is in correctly. If it is backwards what you describe would be common. Seen that mistake before on machines.

Do a visual see if the fan is turning, ie water pump as well.

Sure hope it is an easy fix for you and your buddy.

My TC30 Temp gauge has been reading higher and higher till it was finally in the red. I used an infrared thermometer gun and could not find a spot on the block higher than 180-190. Pulled the instrument cluster and examined the gauge. The coil looked like it was coming apart.

I resolved it by installing a live gauge. Temp varies between 180-200 which is normal with a 180 Thermostat.
