Hi,
Does anyone know if there should be a diode between the regulator / rectifier and the stator on a 15amp charging circuit?
Battery voltage goes to ground when ignition is on.
Have put the new (second hand from USA) stator in and started up the beast today.
Stator is outputting 46 volts A/C with leads disconnected at fast idle.
Is this normal?
Can anyone tell me the amp rating based on the output.
The old 15 amp stator output only about 28 volts A/C.
Do I need a bigger regulator / rectifier now?
The VR will have the 2 ACV leads from the stator going into it and the 12VDC output.
No other diode in that circuit. A diode is a type of rectifier. A rectifier simply acts as an electrical check valve, only allowing the positive part of the AC sine wave to pass and blocking the negative part. This results in a pulsing DC.
I think you are reading the 2nd part in the service manual about "if voltage is more than 28V?
I have NEVER seen a maximum voltage specified, only a minimum, which you pass.
RE: the mentioned above. How could they tell the VR is defective if it's NOT plugged in.
I think you are just fine and when an actual load is put on the system, things will be "normal".
Thanks Bill,
I will hook it all up to the VR and see what the voltage output from VR (B) is.
They suggest no more than about 14.8 volts DC I do believe.
Will post my results when I get them.
Cheers?
Yep 46 volts A/C in to the regulator from the stator.
Also 46 volts A/C from B+ terminal on regulator to ground.
I'd say the regulator / rectifier is stuffed. Maybe because of the previous faulty stator. ?
Put the new Kohler 25 403 32-S regulator, rectifier in and started up the beast. Output voltage from regulator is 12.54 volts DC and rises as the engine revs go up. Yay! Just proves 46volts A/C from the stator is o.k.!
