Might finally get my IH

So I'm waiting to hear back from the seller but I'm hoping I'll be able to pick this gem up this coming weekend. I've got my fingers crossed. It's not perfect but definitely looks salvageable. The hardest part would likely be finding a cover for the self propelled
I haven't seen any of this model (334) in person or on this site so this could be a very unique/rare model. Maybe someone here knows that for sure?

I'll let you know if I'm successful in picking this one up

Re: Might finally get my IH

Looks outstanding! I didn't even know you guys had IH models up there in Canada. That is pretty much the top-belt drive that I'm looking for as a donor for my 1968 top-belt drive clone, but that is way too nice to be a donor. I have a NOS 1968 top belt drive that is looking for a home on a restorable top belt drive machine.

Spoke to the seller last night and I'll be going to pick it up tomorrow. He thinks he has the cover for the top as well somewhere so he's going to see if he can find it. I'll snap some better pictures of it once I get it home

Re: Might finally get my IH

I wish I could say that but it's just luck most of the time. I've been looking for an IH by Lawnboy for more than 3 yrs.
if I ever decide to sell any of my collection I'll be sure to come to you guys first. Or if I kick the bucket I'll tell my wife to get on here to give you guys first kick
On a serious note I'm pretty excited about this one as I've never seen a self propelled IH version of this mower. I've only seen 331's or the 8226 and 8227 lawnboy equivalent to the 334, so I expect this is a very rare mower. It will find a spot in my growing Lawnboy museum

Re: Might finally get my IH

Picked up the mower today. It's in ok condition. I bought it from the original owner who is 80 yrs old and is downsizing. He believes he has the bag, rod and chute for it as well but couldnt find it when I was there today. He said he'll call me when he locates it as he clears his stuff out. the shroud is pretty good but deck is rough with some holes and a crack by the side discharge. I'll either see if I can get it welded or look for a donor deck. Also missing the rod that activates the self propel. There's currently a home made rod on there now but it does work. The mower runs but needs a good going through. Self propelled works as well.
It's too late to take pics now today but I'll try to get a few up in the next day or so. I got it for a pretty amazing price and I'm quite happy even with knowing I have a bit of work to do on it
If anyone happens to have a spare rod for the self propel mechanism shoot me a PM as id be interested in it

Too cool. I would love to find an IH, but they are like Rainbow Unicorns. Maybe someday...

Re: Might finally get my IH

Another great find. I have never seen one with the Canada model tag. I think I have a NOS Belt cover, but if I remember correctly it is green. Also think I have the speed nuts that fasten to the shroud for attaching it.

From what I recall, they were quite common up in that area (I grew up in the OHare area and worked at a now-defunct Lawn-Boy dealer in the 90's)

I'd like to think so Murph, but everything I've read, tells me that the IH Lawnboys had low production numbers. I rarely see any for sale and there's only occasionally a part on eBay for an IH machine.

Heck, I'd be willing to make a tribute IH if I could find a decent similar vintage LB to repaint.

Re: Might finally get my IH

I've only ever seen one other one in my neck of the woods and it was about 3 yrs ago and someone else snatched it up before I was able to grab it. It was the regular push style, not self Propelled. I thought about making a IH clone awhile back but i didn't as I didn't have a IH model tag. I'm fussy about that stuff and would have wanted the legit tag for it
We'll see how much work this one is going to need once I tear it down. Here's a few more pics now that I have it in my garage

Re: Might finally get my IH

So a bit of an update. I'm looking for a donor deck for this mower so if anyone has a Lawnboy one same as this that they'd be willing to part with please shoot me a message. I ordered a new cover for the self propelled mech that's on top of the shroud along with the brackets to hold it on. I'm on the look out for another grass cover plate as well. If I can't find a yellow one I may just paint a green one. It also needs a new belt as the one on there while it is complete is in pretty rough shape. They still appear to be available so I'm going to order one.
Mower starts first pull and runs great
Looking forward to refurbish this one

Re: Might finally get my IH

Are you using part numbers from the equivalent Lawnboy model for your parts orders? You can easily paint covers to match. That is old enough to be a points and condenser ignition. I have a IH/Lawnboy bit later model with the D-600 engine and Lawnboys first solid-state ignition (No points). It originally was a bottom shaft drive (to the wheel capstans) self-propelled, but at some point all that was removed. It starts and runs good.

Re: Might finally get my IH

Yes, the cover and clips I ordered are for a green mower. I'll be painting the cover white.
It appears that several Lawnboys came with the same deck even if they weren't self propelled. Those that weren't self propelled just had a plate mounted over top of the depression where the self propelled gear goes. Problem is I haven't been able to find out what models came like that
