been looking on craigslist better part of 3 months now nothing but crap thats over priced..i mow yards on the side tired of using a old crappy fwd looking for one that mulches good or change the blade...maybe one that has ball bearing wheels if that's possible with a $400 budget maybe a little more.. yards i mow are usually flat so awd not really necessary
If you buy new get the nicest honda your $400 budget will allow. If you increase your budget by $200 you can get one of the top of the line hondas or a cast aluminium deck Toro with a honda Engine.
Of course being a Lawnboy guy I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a nice used Lawnboy. I bought my first Lawnboy in 1985 (a Bricktop 5024) and I used it for 25 years on 3 lawns with no more than plugs, filter, points, condenser and a helicoil. Still have that mower today. My wife and I mow 8 lawns around the neighborhood and she uses the 1975 D-600 5273 and I use the 1980 F model 5247. You could look for a really nice mid 90's 3 speed Lawnboy with the F engine and aluminum deck. A mower like that should last someone a very long time with a bit of care. Good luck in your search. Bill
Here is an example. I prefer the earlier ones with the metal Walbro carb.
Toro, Honda or old Lawnboy, you can't go wrong with any of them. I agree with Bill, the early (1993 or 94) Lawnboy Gold series with the Toro 3 speed tranny and walbro carb were about as good as it gets for the money in my opinion. That one in the Craigslist link seems to be a heck of a deal.
Lol, I personally don't do Honda, but in a parts buyout that I did, I got a bunch of Honda transmissions...They have been one of my best eBay sellers. Wish I had a bunch more of them.
On a side note, I agree that the mower in the Craigslist ad above looks like a good deal. You may see if the seller would ship. Usually around $100 for shipping, which would leave you within budget and still have a better machine than you would get at a box store for the same money.
I had 10 honda's last year. 8 had bad transmissions. So 8 got sold as push only. Every honda mower I have ever had over 30 mulch terrible. They all leave wind row trails. I have thick grass, but still.
My old 19" bricks and other lawnboys mulch 100X better. Those Super recyclers will outlast 10 of the recyclers. I have had well over 200 recyclers over the years. The newer ones are cheap. Parts are plastic and they just aren't meant to be more than a 5 year mower. then you go get a shinny new one. But for $150 more go get you a quality Super Recycler and call it a day. PS they mulch fantastic. 2nd only to a DuraForce Lawnboy And maybe an M series.
did find a old school toro commercial side discharge only 2 stroke pro line pretty nice for 140 might go kick the tires then swing by see what the dealer has
i did end up finding a older toro super recycler none self propelled after parts i'll be into it about $75 and got a snapper super vac convertible older 6spd one which bags awesome for like $20 dollars lol carb was dirty so ill use all 3 mowers snapper for bagging toro 2 stroke for side discharge and the recycler for mulch duty
