Finally got my edger home.

About a year ago I had my brother in-law pick up an edger from me that I found on Craigslist in his area. Finally the wife and I made it up to Waco and picked it up.
Initially because of the dowel rod on the blade guard it was thought to be an ET1 that had the front wheel added.
That and the brother in-law said it said ET1 on it.
After getting home with it tonight I am unable to find a model number, so I got out the Lawnboy book, and I am leaning more to it being a 1010.
Haven't checked for spark yet but I turned it over by hand and the compression seems just fine.
If anyone can help with a positive I'd it would be helpful.
Here are some pics.

This is when my brother in-law picked it up.

The shroud looks just like the one on a 1010

The ET1 shroud has less holes and the hump is on the opposite side.

Model and serial number on engine.

Sweet edger Lee! Looks like the ET-1 did not have the toothed adjustment bar like the newer edgers. I think you are on the right track with it being a 1010. Someone may have replaced the guard with one from an ET-1. If you are going to refurbish it I would just grind off that axle rod before painting. Not hurting anything but doesn't go with a 1010. And look what Sam from rsmotorsports had for me!!

Very nice! Yes the model 1010 seems to be correct to me. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one progress. They are nice to look at when original, but it's a whole new ball game when they have fresh paint and new decals. Thanks for posting the pics Lee!

Been looking for a recoil assy for it this morning on eBay. No luck so far. Did see a coil and order it just in case.

Nice Looking machine Lee
If Old Lawnboy doesn't find that used recoil let me know. I've got one you can have. Mine has the iron horse logo/embossed on it though as that was standard in Canada. If you want it let me know and it's yours

Thanks, Bill and ReedZ.
I will see what Bill has as I would like it to be original. But if he doesn't have one I would use one with the Iron Horse logo until I could find an original.
Lee.
Also looks to need new handle grips and a choke rod.

Well, I had a great week! Work sent me on an emergency job in Las Vegas...finished up early on Thursday so I made a stop at Counts Kustoms, then today I got some edger goodies in the mail. Thanks Bill.

Thanks Rex,
I used the part # you gave me and ordered them from parts tree. It said they were compatible with 1010.
They were a bit pricey, but what ya gonna do...lol

Well it appears that the original assessment was correct.
Today I started playing with it and found this.

So it seems I have an ET-1 that was converted to a 1010.
But now I lack the proper shroud to restore it as an ET-1
This being the case, I guess I will keep the upgrades.
Any thoughts?

That's a toss up for me, but I think I would lean toward putting it back to an ET-1. I'm not at all up on these edgers, is the ET-1's color Terra Cota? And the 1010 is gold? If you go with the ET-1 does the rod on the blade guard get a hardwood rolling pin/wheel?

edit; disregard the question about the color of the ET-1, just looked it up and noticed it's gold and white as well. I think that shroud you have was throwing me off, it looks like a Terra Cotta colored shroud.

Rex, yes the ET-1 would have the wooden roller on the gaurd instead of the third wheel. The problem is it has a different shroud that doesn't have the holes for the front wheel adjuster. It also has the hump on the opposite side.
The original color for both the ET-1 and the 1010 was gold.
I have dug into it a bit today and have found good and bad. I gave it a couple shots of MMO into the cylinder and slowly turned it over a few times to get it lubed back up.
Then I removed the tank which was full of rust. I have it soaking in vinegar now. After cleaning the points with some 400 grit paper, it has spark! Looks like everything in that area has been replaced at some time. The bad thing now is that the threads for the sparkplug are not good, which mean either a Helicoil, or a new jug are in order.
I gave it a shot of fuel in the plug hole but it never did fire.
Seems to have OK compression just by putting my finger over the hole.
Here are a couple pics

Well, I have watched a few YouTube videos about repairing sparkplug threads. It appears that if I use heavy grease on the tap that I may be able to install a thread saver without removing the jug. The grease being to catch the shavings from the tap.
Also after some consideration, I suppose I could weld the extra holes shut in the shroud and return it to an ET-1. The hump would be hidden by the recoil assembly.
It would be a little more work, and a few extra bucks...But I am already into it for a few bucks now.
I guess I will keep thinking about it while I am getting it running.
I have left my 5020 on the back burner as I seem to never have time to take it down south of Houston to get the wheel adjuster slot welded up so I can get the deck painted.

I guess one consideration would be whether you are rebuilding this to use or for display. The third adjustable wheel is probably more user friendly than the wooden roller however from a collectible point of view, original would be better if you are not going to use it. Keep us posted. Bill

Well tonight I installed a Helicoil in the plug hole. This was my first time installing one, but it was a piece of cake.
The worst part was making sure I didn't get shavings in the piston. I spent a while swabbing around with q-tips which really catch shavings well. Then flush it out with MMO and blew her out with air. Feeling good that I left it clean. Finally installed the helicoil, and the plug now fits Great. I guess next I will tackle the carb.

After tapping.

With Helicoil installed.

Test fit an old plug....Fits great.

So I went exploring a bit. Looks like the reeds have been replaced at some point. The carb was full of icky Gooey....Looks like that will have to soak a bit before I can get any further into it. If memory serves me correctly, I think I have a NOS C carb. I'll have to dig around and see if I do. The cylinder wall looks nice and everything seems nice and tight. I believe she will run!!
I did notice however that the shroud is made for this fuel tank bracket. The ET-1 didn't have this bracket...So I may just refresh it as is and let it remain a modified ET-1.

Well the float is trash...But it seems to look like a Duraforce float and not the original...Any thoughts?
Looks like after soaking for a bit I got a good Color sample for the gold.

Yep, float is typical for that age. Should be easy to find a replacement though. I think you are right, that float was used for many years on many different units.

Looks like you found a real good spot to match the paint. Another good spot is under the handle grips. You know I'm thinking that both Ford and Chrysler used a paint that will be a great match. I remember Dad bought a 1971 Plymouth Valiant that looked exactly like that color of gold.

Rex, it looks like part #95-1899 should be the match. I just ordered one so I will know in a few days.
I looked in the color match section and it claims Duplicolor gold engine enamel is a good match. I am going to check it out and see. It looks a little lighter than I thought it would. Looking at the picture thread I see a lot of variation.

Post #10 for the gold match Duplicolor.

Lee. You're correct on the paint. I've used duplicolor gold engine paint and it is a very good match. I did my 59 quietflite with it and it turned out nicely. I'll be using it for my 5150 when I get around to it also.

Rex, I remember that you changed your bottom oil seal on your 1013. I cross checked part #s mine also uses # 603101, I ordered National oil seal#350566 on eBay.
Thanks for the heads up. Made it easy for me!!

Well I got the carb cleaned up a bit.

Going slow but making a little progress. Looks like it has bent reeds. Guess I'll have to go dig in my goody box and grab a new set for her.

Looking good Lee! Glad that info on the oil seal helped out. I think that seal is available at some auto parts stores as well, just use that same info. Your project is making me want to go out and find a gold Lawnboy. Those have always been my favorite color. Maybe I can make that 1968 D-400 clone that I have always wanted? I still have only seen one of those, and it was on ebay, I think. I would jump on that gold Model 5210 in Austin, TX that has been on ebay for a long time, but it's a bit over the budget.

Rex, I have my fingers crossed hoping you get a gold one!!
I know it will be sweet when you get your hands on it.
The gold ones are my favorite ones too. I am anxious to get this one running.
