Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

The motor turns almost 1 revolution then stops, I can turn it by hand or the starter will turn it to 1 position then stops??? What might be the problem?
Is this Tractor worth spending time on?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

Well check from top to bottom on this! We just did this to a Kohler CV12.5. Checked flywheel magnets first, checked PTO area, then worked to taking head off. Mine had a screw in piston area blocking movement! Here is thread of it!
Found another for the herd!!!! :)

IF it's a Briggs OHV engine, adjust the valves using the proper procedure.

Without stating the Sears 917.xxxxxx number or Engine brand, one can only guess which engine you might have.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

Sorry about the numbers, The Tractor is a Craftsman II LT 4000 Motor; Briggs& Stratton Model # 422707, Type 1522 01, Code 93054858 Twin 18 HP.
I haven't dug too far into it yet due to available time and so far thanks for the feed back. I hope to start on it soon.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

That's NOT an OHV engine.
Have you gotten the battery charged & LOAD Tested?
Places like Auto Zone will load test a battery.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

I have a Vanguard (Made by B&S) that would rotate in a simular fashion. Found a screw behind the flywheel that destroyed the stator. Be careful when you try and try again to get an engine moving, and things don't change. More often than not, you'll end up making things worse!

See here:

It depends. A few minor things to look for

It depends.

Have you taken out both spark plugs and then tried to whirl it over with the starter? (a badly flooded engine will spew out fuel, or water, or whatever out of the spark plug holes, if it was an hydraulic lock...this test can also catch a perfectly good engine on fire, if you don't ground out the high tension leads before whirling the engine over, so be very careful to do that, ground out the leads)

If you did remove both sparks, and the thing continues to lock, did you try manually turning the engine counter clockwise, to see if it will lock while turning in that direction? (turn it backwards at least 4 revolutions, do not force it manually or otherwise if you feel a heavy drag, as previously stated from other replies on this thread)

Look for starter pinion gear damage, and also inspect the flywheel ring gear for a problem.

Make sure the clutch belt for the driveline & mower deck are disengaged, and not the problem.

Check the engine oil, to see if there is any in it, and if so, is it overfull?

Does the oil from the dipstick smell/appear heavy laden with gasoline or water?

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

Is the engine physically "locking up", or will only turn one revolution and then repeat?

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

Thanks WWXX, I'll try those tests and see what I come up with, and Bill thanks for the help so far. The engine will only seem to turn to 1 spot then stop... in either direction. I have to apologize for the slow responses, I'm not getting much time to work on this.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

you need a good high cranking amps battery for that engine and make sure all cables and connections are good. A poor ground cable connection will cause that.

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

I got time to play with it this morning and the motor defiantly stops in 1 spot whether you turn it CW or CCW. I'll be waiting for the time to tear it down!!!

Re: Craftsman LT4000 motor ?

Got it running... tore off heads and that freed everything up???? Runs like a champ!!! K now I have a problem getting the belt on. Lowes and Sears couldn't help me with the size cause I didn't have the 9177254860 #. But my local mower shop compared the old belt with a new and sold me a Stens 248-92", and for the life of me I can't get the deck back on??? It is about 1 inch from meeting the the raing bracket holes, if you know what I mean. I don't have a manual so not sure I'm installing deck right. The beld is strung like a guitar string with the lever disengaged and deck lowered and worse with it raised. Please help, I'll be searching for answers. Thanks
