Transaxle locked up

I have a 6-7 year old Craftsman LT3000 with a 6-speed 206-545c transaxle. After hours of mowing, I stopped to move something and when I let the brake out, the tractor jumped, then completely locked up. Wheels wouldn't turn and the gear shift was locked in gear, could not shift.

I took the transaxle apart and found 2nd gear in 3 pieces. Purchased a new gear, put it all back together and took it for a test drive. I was able to shift fine for the first minute but then the same problem came back. Locked in gear, can't move. I'm thinking the broken gear was a result of something else wrong which obviously I didn't fix.

Anyone have this issue and what did you do to fix it? Any suggestions? I'd rather save $250 and fix the one I have!

Thanks a lot,
Mark

Re: Transaxle locked up

Nothing, just mowing. The only thing I ever pull is a lawnsweeper in the spring and fall.

Re: Transaxle locked up

A broken detent spring can let the shift forks slide over where they shouldn't go,and lock the tranny in one gear,or possibly let two gears engauge at the same time, that'll lock it up tight..did the shifter "click" into each gear,or was it feeling loose or no "click"?..if so the detent spring or ball for that gears fork might have failed..be sure to look for and clean out any busted peices in the case good too!..one BB sized ball between 2 gears can raise all kinds of ell!..

Re: Transaxle locked up

the spring and BB were look fine and were in place when I took it apart. During my brief test after re-assembly, the gears were definitely clicking.
