Craftsman gt 6000 18hp Kohler

Need info on type of oil, or oils used in transaxle. Also filter type, etc.
Any help is appreciated. Drain plug locations, fill tube location, etc.

Re: Craftsman gt 6000 18hp Kohler

Can you tell us the year and model number of your GT6000?

There should be a tag under the seat that looks something like this:

Re: Craftsman gt 6000 18hp Kohler

carheir,

More information required...

I'm assuming that given that it is a GT6000, and that you stated 18hp Kohler that your tractor may have a Kohler Magnum M18. (horizontal shaft or vertical shaft?)

Does your tractor & engine look similar to these pictures?

Re: Craftsman gt 6000 18hp Kohler

You have one identical to mine. Therefore: you have the HydroGear 218-3010L transmission. I forget if I drained the case via the spin-on filter (WIX 51563) or if there was a drain plug. I do remember that there is an oil level plug (hex-keyed slot for removal). Seems like you have to remove the left rear wheel/tire to get to it. I filled mine via that plug, or by the vent hose that is tucked under the rear end, somewhere near the gas tank.

Oil - 20W-50 ..... manual says approx. 1/2 gallon (2 qts)

If you look at the files I attached, you might notice that one document says 10W-40, another says 20W-50. I have used 20W-50 in mine. Might take awhile to warm up in the winter, but it has worked fine for me. Either is probably OK.

Thanks very much for the info. Really appreciate your assistance. BTW, what size, etc are those lug tires on your tractor?

Hmmm..... I would have to go look. I think those were some old Firestones?? I have since put turfs back on the rear, along with a set of chains. Those stay on for the winter in case I get a chance to move some snow with the front blade.
I have Carlisle Tru Power ags on our PGT-9000.

Re: Craftsman gt 6000 18hp Kohler

And..... I think that WIX 51563 equates with Hydro-Gear's 51563... here is a good place to get the Hydro-Gear 51563.

Hydro-Gear 51563 FILTER, SPIN-ON

I think I originally got a filter at NAPA for a higher price, then ordered online for one or two to put on the shelf.

Hydro Gear 51563 is a Wix 57253 per the WIX website.

Thank you, Bill, for clarifying that. Several years ago when I was ordering those filters I know I had that information.......

I also need to make a clarification to a previous post: On my GT6000, I used 10W-40 oil, not 20W-50. (I used 20W-50 in the trans on our 2009 PGT-9000.
