Hulk II (1988 Craftsman II) 917.255919 Summer Refresh.

I purchased Hulk II back in May 2010 for $80.00 and performed a complete restore (In the non-air-conditioned shed). Hulk II has performed flawlessly with heavy yard blade working of rocks and dirt, pulling large bushes, towing a heavy trailer, and at times picking up mowing duties. Overall Hulk II has been a very reliable machine. The Refresh is mainly to bring back his luster, add a few upgrades which will convert him from a 917.255919 to a 917.255914 model, and give me something to do after work. Iíll apply the many the lessons learned from my previous restores. I donít think Iíll need to spend the usual two grand + on him but a couple hundred should do, we will see.
The list of things I plan to do are;
1. Sand and re-paint (Forest Green).
2. Add Craftsman Decals
3. Add new Hulk II Decal
4. Change Transaxle Fluid
5. Install new Drive belt.
6. Sand and Re-Paint Rims (Gloss Black)
7. Add Clutch Idler Pulley.
8. Add Metal Steering Collar.
9. Check steering bushings.
10. Refresh Engine
a. De-carbon
b. Check Valve lash
c. Paint
d. Filters
e. Oil Change
11. Add LED Headlight mod.
12. Fix / replace the tail lights with LEDís
13. New seat, Move old one to RED.
14. Clean, sand, and re-paint Deck (Was only used a couple times)
Correct other minor things as I go along. Should keep me busy over the summer.
With the steering and clutch Idler upgrades, this will change Hulk IIís Model number from 917.255919 to 917.255914

What makes the conversion change the model number?
Which mod changes which number...
A mod to number list would be nice.

Thanks,

Re: Hulk II (1988 Craftsman II) 917.255919 Summer Refresh.

Larry; I know that Hulk II is a shaft drive and Red is belt drive. can you tell much difference in performance? I have 2 shaft drive Cubs (1863 and 1641)and 2 belt drive Deere GT's (GT235 and GT245) and for mowing and cart pulling I can't tell one's any better than the other. I use a small farm tractor for any ground engagement stuff. Sorry if this is a little off topic.

Re: Hulk II (1988 Craftsman II) 917.255919 Summer Refresh.

Cannon51, RED, Hulk II and BOH are all belt drives. The differences are;
Brother of Hulk (BOH) has a metal steering bracket, Hulk II's is plastic (and cracked)
BOH has an adjustment idler for the ground drive belt, Hulk II doesn't (but there is a slot for it).

I have acquired (actually two) of the drive belt idler brackets and pulleys, and a metal steering support bracket.
Both Hulk II and BOH have the horizontal 18 hp Briggs and the peerless 3 speed with Hi-Lo.

RED has the vertical 18 hp Briggs and a peerless six speed transaxle

tkskagen, Hulk II is a 917.255919, by replacing the plastic steering support with the metal one and adding the drive belt idler brackets and pulleys this should change him to 917.255914.

This evenings relaxation, Cleaned the shop out to make room for parts. Removed the Deck, Hood, Seat, Battery, and drained the gas. Don't want to do it all at once so here is my stopping point for the evening.

It should be a pretty quick and easy refresh since you've already been through it before.

It looks like everything is still nice shape!

Yes, new paint, Seat, Change all fluids and some engine work. I'll add the modifications. Should make him a show / work machine again.
I like working on these if it didn't show in my other threads. Thanks!

***Is there a chart or "spreadsheet" that denotes what each number of the Model Number stands for? I would really like to have this, if available!***

I am in the process of modifying the chassis (frame) of a 1992 GT6000 that original came with a "blown" Horizontal Shaft 20hp Onan, to accept a recently rebuilt Vertical Shaft 25hp V-Twin Kohler Command.

Thankfully most of the parts I have especially a recently rebuilt "Peerless" 3-speed with Hi-Low transaxle.

LOTS OF WORK!

My mistake Larry. I assumed the horizontal engine tractors used a drive shaft. Glad you've got another thread going, I always follow them.

Re: Hulk II (1988 Craftsman II) 917.255919 Summer Refresh.

Tonight's progress, Engine removed, Fire wall removed, Foot rests and fender pan removed, gas tank removed. Add another item to my list, new fuel line. Tomorrow I'll remove the steering tower and wire harness. This will give me a rolling frame that I can pressure wash this weekend before final dissemble.
Finding it challenging to find places for the large parts, but I did.

Thanks, Hulk II has proved to be a reliable hard worker and back-up mower over the past seven years, he deserves this.
