Started on the other GT6000 today, having question on plow model number?

We got this over the summer and really did nothing with it. Cleaned carb a couple times and that's about it. It works and mows but needed painting and other work first. We decided to start yesterday and my friend Bob stopped in and stated he had the snow plow for it. He dropped it off and we pulled it in the try to mount it on. Well the model number is long gone on plow so I down loaded closest one. Not the same as some parts are not same as what we have, looks like a lot of BS to get it on. While taking deck off and looking under it, found the crank oil seal leaking badly onto PTO. Well one job aborted, another started! Yanked the engine and will change seal. Dad did most of the lifting, I could help some.
Anybody have the part number./model number of the plow that fits a GT6000? I'll take pictures of it tomorrow. Took it apart for easier lifting and set up! 1996 GT6000 917.257740

Thank you Sir!! As is normal with my friend, a lot of parts seem to be MIA!! Thank you for great pictures!! :)

You are welcome. I have had my 6 speed GT since 1993 when I bought it new.
It has a Kohler magnum 18 hp and I have run it hard over the years and
it still keeps going. Here is a picture with blade and another one
with snow blower. The one with the snow blower is how I have
had it set up the last few years.

We have TWO of them right now! One with blower and cab we made from a pile and this one.
Looks like the plow we were given is older model, finally found model number that matches the pieces we have.

Worked on it today. Took the fender and steps off. While helping dad my thumb got badly pinched in between wrench and fender. Dad thought I was ready and nailed the impact at time. Boy that smarts, only casualty today thank God! Been awhile since I had this bad of black thumb! When I was turning wrench for a living it was almost a normal thing! LOL
Dad got the oil seal out of engine after getting tins off. I worked on removing gas tank and taking fuel line off for replacement later. Took the hood apart to sand as well. Dad welded up the crack in fender by seat, seems like a common issue, our Blower GT has similar issue. Think we have the right color for painting, need primer and another can. Shopping after lawyers appointment tomorrow. Get the paint and such then.

Took that huge homemade hitch off while we were at it!

Seems like a common issue with Kohler engines in these GT's, are the oil drain pipes left loose from factory? My Magnum in other GT also was loose? Dad is working on fixing that with grinding the elbow enough to turn it out and put thread seal on it and pipe it better.

The crack all welded up.

The deck is outside waiting its turn.

The drain on my MV18S is loose also. I've been wondering just what to do with it. I'll probably wait until winter is over to go after it.

Well must be something they sis back then cjet!?
The Blower one was super loose and we thought this one may be cause of oil leak on PTO and idler.

We got on it today, dad was doing body work yesterday as well. Was warm enough for pressure washer so washed the frame and oily parts. Dad replaced the oil seal and mounted engine. We got gas tank in and new fuel line. It fired right up and seems to run better. Was able to walk it to parking spot at idle. Now for primer and more body work tomorrow.

Our best friend on this oily frame!

Eric.. if the engine had one of them 'no tools needed' oil drain thingys on it.. they all leak.. they were made with straight threads.. not the tapered pipe threads.. every one I got I replaced with 3/8 pipe & elbow.. I had a lotta of the 'no tools' that I could turn out with fingers.. not tight one bit..

now the cranks on the 20 & 22 hp Kohler models were 1 1/8 diameter.. all the engines before these had 1 inch cranks.. B & S too.. I think B & S used 1 inch cranks on their 'V' twins too.. keep this in mind when u need a new electric clutch..

I have the rounded dark green hood on my GT6000.. it has the 20 hp Kohler with 1 1/8 crank.. the electric clutch was burned up when I got it.. have a 22 hp sittin on shelf for a spare..

Whirly weirdest thing is the drain is metal pipe left loose in block!? Very tight area and dad wound up grinding the elbow some to get it to turn a couple more turns ( see post 6 pictures)! It tight now and accessible. We had a engine out of a round top GT and saw what you mean! Those crank sizes kept it in inventory way longer than we cared!!

I went back to get a look.. I never did put an elbow right next to the engine.. I used a long straight pipe first to get it past the frame.. then downward with an elbow.. I could get 3/8 pipes up to 9 inches long here by 1/2 inch lengths.. gonna have to look at the 22 hp on my shelf to really see how they r made..

It's weird Whirly! The magnum on the blower tractor was same way! Loose and elbow to nipple and another elbow! Both are fixed now! Dad working on painting fender.

Dad started painting some of the tins. Glad my chair is comfortable! Sore today with rain did not help. He painted bottom of tins black and primed tops.

Painted inside of hood.

We bought the wrong paint in TSC. Thought it was machinery gray, guess it was Massy Ferguson gray! The paint did not mix well either, good test at least, will fix it when dad gets back to it tomorrow.

Dad got busy with painting some today. He ran out of the grey as he finished sides of hood. I got to thinking of a different color might be nicer. We had a can of white dad is going to use on his car in future. Looked at the two tone affect and think it will look nice! Had enough paint to do good coat on hood. Progress continues!

I would be interested on how the vertical Kohler drives the three speed Hi/Lo transaxle? RED has a vertical Briggs twin, and the 6 speed transaxle with the pulley on top. I would like to put a 3 speed Hi/Lo in him.

#17 ·
Larry it has a strange guide system that makes belt go vertical. Actually forgot how the one plate went by engine and we both had a time trying to remember how it went. I can get you picture today if you want? I should anyway for future reference! Going to town for paint today.

#19 ·
Got home from town and we forgot the cap of gray paint! Wound up buying wrong one. Looking at hood decided to put it all together and install it to see how combo looks. Think it looks good!

Definitely wrong paint!

#20 ·
That is a pretty wild transition from horizontal to vertical on the drive belt, probably more than I want to try on RED. The 2 tone looks good, might try something like that on Hulk's refresh!

#21 ·
Sure is Larry! Like I said got confused on front plate after engine removal.
Thanks! I got idea out of the blue on paint!

Eric.. I have the GT 6000 too but it is a hydro tranny.. the belt on it makes a path very similar.. the tranny pully is smaller too & there is an idler near the front of the tranny that has a fan connected to it..

#23 ·
Our snowblower GT6000 is hydro as well but has Magnum engine. Sure is something how they get it to go like that!

Will the chassis have the mounting holes for a high-low 6 speed as well as the other Spicer style 6 speed without low range ?...

I'm not familiar with this vintage of Sears tractors, but I am pretty sure the 6 speed Spicer/Dana ones use 4 bolts that go straight up onto angle iron brackets to the chassis, and the High-Low 6 speed bolts on from the sides of the chassis...maybe they used some kind of adapter plates or something to allow either type to work ?--or is the rear of the chassis just "different" completely ?...

I'd think adding all those idlers and things to make it all work isn't going to be a simple task, and you'd probably need a whole "donor" tractor to rob all the needed parts from...looks to me like that setup would tend to eat the drive belt or make it prone to coming off and getting mangled easy too..

Dad Painted the fender and foot boards yesterday. This paint sure does lay good! We are now planning a gray stripe on foot board o go into fender kinda like the Bolens red stripe dad did. Sure would have liked to help some but last three four days my back is really hurting. Not sure why, getting up is quite the chore! :(

Dad installed the cooling baffle.

I forgot to take a picture of the secret upgrade this tractor will get! The wiring was run from switch to back with ease of access right now. Thought it would look good, it will be surprise!

That two tone on the hood looks pretty good! With the black grill it all blends together. Nice work!

Thanks JP!

The 3 speed Hi/Lo won't fit on a 917.254450 frame, the 6 speed bolts up through the transaxle.

#29 ·
the 917.254450 is a LT tractor.. with 8 inch rear slide on rims.. the rear hitch plate is straight upwards.. now the 3 speed Hi/Lo tranny was used on the GT models.. they had 12 inch bolt on rear rims.. the rear hitch plate was angled on these..

Been busy last few days but dad got some work done. Turned out the Gray we bought was off some but a good match for the original gray! :( Bummer dilemma is repaint hood to match fender or what? Dad did not want to do that and neither did I! Thought add another stripe to tie into fender and foot rests! Think it looks good and subtle way to fix it. Took wheels off and painted them along with the frame( Actually forgot to do it while engine was off). Today might install rear wheels and bring it into garage for front wheels to be painted and some installing?

Tractor is looking great Eric!

Larry,
The transition isn't so wild if going from Horizontal to Vertical engine. In your case I think it would take a bit more engineering with the clutch pulleys.

#32 ·
Thanks Jerry! Well other than the deck it is done. Dad finished the wheels and got the fender and foot rests installed. We installed the rear taillights we had laying around. The lights were bought for my Bolens and wound up using another type from a truck stop. These replace the reflectors the factory installed. I let it run for 5-10 minutes to warm up. I see what my friend JP says about the underhood duct work! Engine was cool after that, I covered the hood with a rag and it got warm. Will look into modifying this on snow blower GT. I had moisture in dipstick when checking oil on the tractor. Hope to enjoy driving it around before selling it!

Seat was not good on our GT so works great on this one! No canopy to get in way!
