not my month

July has not been a good month for me. first my water heater failed. next i forget to wish my wife Happy Anniversary.

Then tonight to top it all off my wife is reducing a marinade down to make a steak sauce and the thin pan she was used not only melted the coating to the cooktop, but it warped while stuck and of course POP goes the glass top! That's another 300.00 to fix it, i'm seriously considering just getting a regular old coil top range and be done with it. This was an el cheapo glass top that Sears had on special when we bought the house so we bought it. No timed bake, delayed bake, etc.. and i just don't know if i feel like spending more than the stove is worth on a replacement top! Of course, right now after just getting back from vacation and then replacing the WH i don't have it to spend in either case!

Here's to August, may it be better than July!

I think we all have those months! At least you have a bigger water heater! :) more hot water is always a good thing. Plus it was not a big flood.:)

yeah, caught that one in time. Wish i would have caught what she was doing in time, i've told her before that those thin pans she likes warp too easy on high heat. but i am GLAD i managed to never even hint it was her fault, she is so upset that i know better than to tempt fate! she barely ate her supper then cried herself to sleep in the recliner. I told her stuff happens, and not to worry. Does not good, but it does keep me out the doghouse!

You got me thinking. Wife has been canning on our glasstop. I shudder when I see what's happening with the BIG pots and pressure cookers, etc.

Anyway, I looked ours up and a new one is about $200. Not as bad as I thought...and a little more searching might find it at a better price.

we've canned on this one many times with no issue. even dropped a cast iron skillet on it once, just knew it broke then but it did not.

the replacement top for this one is about 250 plus shipping, so not bad as it could be. but i just dunno if i want to spend that money on a stove we never really liked anyway. the oven takes forever to heat up and lacks any features. i'm gonna go by Lowes tomorrow and see if maybe they have a decent coil top in the scratch and dent area. If not, then we may just use this one carefully and keep a check in the stores for a few weeks.

When it rains it pours Dave, sorry about your troubles! I have a spartan coil top stove that is as simple as can be and I'm good with it. It's the rest of my appliances that are scaring me coming up on 14 years each and I'm waiting for the hammer to fall. Have been keeping my washer and dryer chugging for a couple years now and the refrigerator makes some strang noises when it starts up. The day will come when they all give up the ghost, hopefully not all a once!:i_praying

i don't even want to think about the washer and dryer, they are 14 years old now and the only appliances we brought with us when we bought the house. I can't complain about them, in that time only 2 things that has happened is the igniter coil went out in the dryer 20.00 and i had it fixed the next day. the other was the door would not stay closed, one of the kids sat on it and bent the hinge. found out via google to use a deep well 11/32 socket laying in the track and close the door to bend the hinge back right. That worked perfectly at no cost!

knock on wood i don't eat those words about the washer/dryer!

I'm praying no appliances croak on me any time soon,as I have no means to buy replacements..It'll be craigslist freebies for me if one decides to quit!..

Our furnace was replaced in 2000,but that was 13 years ago already!...doesn't seem possible..the new boiler was 1/2 the size of the old one ,yet rated as much in BTU's,but I feel its undersized and runs a lot more than the old one did..we have a tankless heater built into it for the hot water,so I "deleted" the water heater that was installed in '77 and started leaking a good 13 years ago,I haven't really noticed any big difference in the amount of hot water, but it will take longer to GET some at times..

The stove isn't that old,its electric,we ditched the propane one after it went south one day,and a burner went flaring up out of control and could not be shut off,I had to run outside and shut the main tank valve off..good thing I was home!..I didn't trust it after that with my mom being frail and elderly,so she went back to an electric stove---(which I discouraged her from using as much as possible, she used the oven as a storage chamber and I always feared she'd turn it on by accident and start a fire)--we use the microwave most of the time now anyways..

The Refridgerator is pretty old,and lately it never seems to shut off for long, and makes some ticking type of noises in the muggy 90 degree weather we had a lot of lately..

I decided to run the A/C to reduce the temps in the house so it wouldn't stay running so much..and I try not to buy a lot of food at once,in case it does take a dump on me,I have no other means of keeping food cold other than a dinky "dorm" fridge that may not even work thats been unplugged in my garage a couple of years now..I do have a chest type freezer ,but we had to clean out food left in it for a decade and bleach the interior, and I dont know if that would work, having been left unplugged a few years--or if I dare store food in it any more!..

We have a front loading washer machine I hate,it runs an hour and dont hold much for clothes, and I know they are noted for early failure...the dryer still works but lately its not drying clothes as fast as before,I cleaned the duct hose & vent but I think the heating coil might be dying in it..

Thing I worry most about is the well pump--we paid 1300 to have it replace in december 2011,but from day one I can hear the motor running on it,never heard the old one at all,and sometimes the water "spits" when you open a faucet...guy who did it admits they dont make pumps like they used too,the one that was installed when the house was built lasted 35 years almost..he said "you wont see that out of this one--5-10 years I bet at most, seeing you have so much iron in your water here"...

I dislike having well water in a way,it stinks losing your water when the power goes out...but no water bill to pay, don't anger me one bit..I heard I'll be charged a "betterment fee" for 20 years though, for the water and sewer piping they are installing in the street here now though..--whether I hook up to it or not!..

david we all have them days, weeks etc don't let the devil ride your back and laugh him off, cause if you do let him ride, he'll dig them spurs in deep lol! if all that happened is the top broke and no one got hurt then it's a good day my friend so give a big chuckle at it

yeah i've let it roll off my back but my wife is still upset. she's better since figuring out we can use 3 out of 4 eyes, so it gives us time to either fix this one or get a new stove. I hate to spend money excessively, but i'm really leaning towards a new stove WITHOUT a glass top so we don't worry about it again! If i can stretch it out a month or two i may even be able to get a gas line run over and put in a gas range like we really wanted.
