My wife and I have been renting a storage space for the past year. We rented it at first to clear out things while we remodeled the master suite, but it has continued on from there as a place to keep things as we eliminated clutter to stage our home for sale.
Homes in our area do not typically sell quickly. We aren't in a situation where we must move; we just want to get closer to work, school, and church, as all are 30+ minutes away now. Anyway, we have been paying $75 a month to rent a 12X16 storage space, and I'm starting to consider the longer term ramifications of that.
I haven't priced portable buildings in years; we bought a used 12X16 portable for our old house 15 years ago for a song, but the family had moved away and wanted to clear it out of the yard so it wouldn't get stolen. I know they are not cheap, and I also know the quality varies.
I'm trying to decide if a DIY 12X24 building project would be feasible or not. I know I can buy a portable that size, but I have some heavy items stored (like a jukebox) and I'd rather have a slab so sagging floors don't become an issue.
Have any of you done a recent "modest" storage building? I'm not thinking workshop, though I would likely run power to it. No plumbing, no lofts, just a basic 12X24 with an 8 foot ceiling.
What kinds of costs are you seeing compared to the mass produced portables?
Steve
