I was given a Mackissic shredder (model 9P) by my neighbor. My original plan was to set it up for use on a 5hp Gravely, but after thinking about it, and given a pto rpm of 980 and the shredder head needing to spin at 2200 to 2600, I just don't feel that it would work well, so I'm doing the build here (hope this is a better fit here as ut will be standalone now).
As you can see, it has seen some use. Now comes the fun part. I'm currently building a new frame for it to mount on.
The enfine that was on it was a 8hp Tecumseh snowblower engine, but mice had nestes in it and caused damage beyond what I'm willing to deal with, but I do have a 5hp Tecumseh, that after talking to Mackissic tech support, should be plenty for my needs(I do have the option of installing a larger engine later if I find I need it).
After doing the math for pulley sizing for rpm's, I've found that I will have to buy a pulley, somehow I don't have one of the right size, so the frame build is on hold.
In the mean time though, I'll be getting to work on the shredder head. It's seen a lot of use and the hammers need to be flipped, as well as the spacers replaced. I'll find out about the pins once I get it all apart. The hopper repair should be easy, just weld a piece of angle iron on the outside of the split corner to repair it.
I'll try to get some more pictures tomorrow for where the build is at for the moment.
Question time.
1)Has anyone used die cast zamac for a gas engine pulley, or is it not recommended?
2)Would it be worthwhile to build a clutching style belt tensioner for easier starting?
3)Does anyone have any experience feeding compost through these (which will be it's main use)?
