Need advice to choose S240 or X350

I need to buy my first lawn tractor. Initially, I was planning to get X300 because of $300 off 2015 model. However, I went to two different JD dealers and they don't have any left. I'm having trouble to make decision between S240 and X350. I will use my tractor mainly for mowing my half acre yard. It's almost flat with a little hilly on the north side of my house. Also, I'll use it to pick up leaves in the fall and plowing the snow (with snow blade) on my 90-feet asphalt drive way in the winter. The salesman really wants me to buy X350 but I had hard time to justify the $700 extra. Any advice is really appreciated.

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

X350. Better tractor all around other than the transaxle which is the same. Just be sure to go across the hill rather than up and down. I have the X330 and love the way the new deck cuts, comparable to the 7 Iron found on the commercial zero turns. I opted for the 330 due to price and the Briggs in it is very comparable to the Kawasaki in the 350, only difference between those 2, so you may look at that as well.

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

If budget allows, last years X310 with power steering would be my choice, because of the better K58 transaxle. The new model year version X370 sadly only has a K57

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

Thanks for the suggestions. X370's price is way over my budget. I understand 300 series has better frame but I'm curious why it's important for a lawn tractor. Also, it seems lots of posts in this forum warns the snow plowing could damage the transmission. JD's salesman said the snow blade is only good for light snow. I'd like to know how many inches of snow will be considered safe for S240. Thanks.

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

My thought is the S240 will work fine for lawn care. For snow removal I would get a good walk behind Snow blower.

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

For Your Use either Machine would be Fine My Reason for a X350 would be this I like a Machine where Your front Blade Is controlled By a On Board Lift system either spring assist Foot Pedal Lift Or electric Lift Electric lift kit Where the S240 uses a Blade with a separate Lift Handle Like the D100 series 46-in. (117-cm) Snow Blade - 2015 Your size Driveway Is Just fine for Blade work with a K46 Transmission That is In either Model. I have a friend who Has Been Running a JD LT180 for the Last 12 Plus Years(LT180 uses a K46 Transmission) & all It does Is Till His Garden with a Tiller for Tractors Manual Lift - Description - BERCO Accessories for garden tractors and lawn, snowblower for ATV and UTV & Plow snow with the 44inch Blade. It Has Never Cut a Blade of Grass since He Has a Deere Zero turn for That. He actually has Never Changed the transmission Fluid In the K46 either But He does Keep the Tractor & Transmission Clean & free of debris and we Have Many Lawn tractor owners On this forum That Have Been Running there Lawn tractors for Years with a K46 Transmission who also Plow snow for Far Greater sized Driveways Than Yours The other reason I suggest to Go with the X350 Is a 4 Years warranty over a 3 Year warranty of the S240 Nice to Have a extra Years Piece of Mind for any Just In case reasons. Keep In Mind the X300 series is Built On the same Frame as the X500 series so that extra $700 show Up there over the S240. Who Knows somewhere down the Line You Might want to upgrade to a Blower and the same reasons again for me if I were Buying the X350 I would Want My Lift Control to Be Inside of a weather enclosure Instead of Having to reach through slits In the enclosure to control the Blower or Blade. I think You May also Like the ergonomics better On a X300 series The twin Tough Pedal Control is a real Pleasure to Operate over the Pedal controls On the D100/S240 The X300 series also Gives You Better control over the Cutting Height of the deck Making small adjustments compared to the S240's Mowing height adjustment . So That's some other things the extra $700 Gives You

The white Powdery snow You can Push More than 6 inches with either machine & Not worry about the K46. The Heavy wet snow/ Slush is where You don't want to Have to come Home & Push That when It over say 3inches with either Machine But Heavy wet snow/ Slush Can be done with out Harm to the K46. You Just Take smaller Bite's with the Blade angled That is when a 2 stage Blower is really handy. I ran a Blade for Year's In Far Up State NY In Heavy wet snow/ Slush on a JD R70 rear engine rider with 38inch Blade & a JD 130 with 42inch Blade as well as a Little Murray Lawn tractor with Blade. It Just took me Longer to clear snow from My 1/4 Mile driveway I was eventually running a JD 240 On the drive with Blade & I finally started using a 42inch single stage Thrower On that driveway from Heck. But all those Lawn tractors & Rear engine rider did Handle that drive as well It just ended Up being a 4hour after Duty Job so when It snowed Before work/Duty I was a Very grumpy NCO with My soldiers On snow days since I retired from the Army in 2002 I have Mostly just snow Plowed My driveway Until the Last Two Years I finally Bought a two stage Blower( it took tractor forums about 12 Years To get Me back Into a Blower) But this year I only used the Blower twice ended Up Plowing snow with My Cub Cadet for what Little 1 to 3inch snow falls we had this year In Northeastern IL

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

For mowing, the X300 is amazing and quite good.

I put a snowblower on my X300, In my opinion, its way too big and heavy for this machine. I wish I had kept by Honda snowblower.....

I imagine with the wimpier frame, the S240 would have a harder time with the snowblower attachment.

Re: Need advice to choose S240 or X350

I went with the x310 about 2 years ago. I have a 1/2 acre and it is relatively flat. I also put a 44" blade on it in the winter and have plowed snow up to 12" - maybe more with it. My thought is that you will lose traction to the wheels well before you do any damage to the transmission. Most Winters I run it without chains, but had to put them on for this last major snowfall in New Jersey because the snow was just too deep. The blade with hydraulic lift combination is the best! I couldn't imagine having to use a lift pedal every time I needed to lift the blade. Also, I tend to do my neighbors so I'm outside for a couple of hours doing driveways. The hydraulic lift is a leg saver.

In the Summer, I use it to mow the lawn, haul & spread 15 yards of mulch using the 10p cart, and have even used it to move 1/2 chord of firewood making sure to not overfill the cart.

I researched the D-series, x300's, and x500's. I have a thread on here where I wrestled with the decision for well over 6 months. If you are financing it - I did and then paid it off earlier. Then, it may not be that much of a difference spread out over 48 months. I'm also one of those people that I get what I want after doing a lot of research or I end up questioning my decision for years.

Overall, it's been a great little tractor and hasn't given me any issues.

Doesn't the x300 and s240 have a subframe? That would make a big difference in frame flex. I've tried the snowblower on the sabre, when it's on the ground blows snow pretty good. But when you lift that blower up, you hear creaks you've never heard before. There is a small subframe for the sabre. But if I was to use it fulltime. Think I would add some angle iron along both frame rails and beef it up. Oh, it's kind of comical going down a hill kitty corner. I noticed on the sabre, the steering wheel angles left and seat angles right. Yeah, a lot of frame twist. At first, the steering wheel is in the center in front of you. Going down that slope, I noticed it's no longer center and steering more with the left hand. But the right hand, had a easier time grabbing the blower lift handle because that moved over also.
