LA145 - Mower belt broke after 13 hours

I just have 13 hours on my LA145 and the mower drive belt just broke. And it was not even being strained as the grass was low to begin with when it snapped.

Is anyone aware of defective driver belts out there? I guess I will learn how to replace one now....

that sucks. how long have you had it? i would think if it was only a few months the dealer MAY warranty it. hard to say as belts are a normal wear item. but if they can look it over and find a problem that caused it, then it should be covered.

if you don't want to fool with trying warranty, then be prepared for a task. you usually have to remove the deck, then take part of the steering gear off to get the new belt on. not really hard to do, just time consuming.

It wouldn't hurt to go down to your dealer and ask him the question you asked us. If he is a decent dealer he will at least share the cost or give you a discount. He might even do it for free.

i would guess and say something is bent and causing belt to do 1 of 2 things.
if the belt looks like it is exploded,like it blew apart,the BELT IS TOO TIGHT.
SO IT WOULD MEAN SOMETHING IS BENT CAUSEING BELT TO BE TOO TIGHT.
next if it looks cut, its rubbing something and knicking it.

it would look like nice clean cut.

i wqould look at my pulleys etc and go look at brand new la145 and see if something looks different.
if your blade was bent,then something else may be bent also.
i seen belts break after 10 hrs.

old timers try to save money and buy a belt from hardware store with one of those belt gauge things to measure it.

DONT DO IT.SPEND EXTRA MONEY AND BUY THE ORIGINAL BELTS FOR LA145.they cost more but just being a 1/4 shorter will break the belts.
this is why i think you have something bent causing belt to be tight all time OR its knicking something.
look at belt,GUTS OUT OF IT,ITS TOO TIGHT, CLEAN CUT, ITS KNICKING SOMETHING.

I would agree that generic belts won't last and the correct length is important. However, if it's a standard length, then a kevlar belt from your local industrial supply is okay and cheaper than driving miles to the nearest JD dealer. In my case (an ancient Model 68) the correct JD belt is a bit too long for whatever reason, so a 1" shorter kevlar belt is perfect.

My LA120 has 225 hrs on it and the belt is good, haven't done anything to it. Just don't ask about the transaxle:biglaugh:

My guess it was damaged or hitting/rubbing something to go that quick:fing32:

Is this the drive belt for the tractor or the drive belt comming of the pto for the deck? My la145 has 111 hours on it and i just changed out the drive belt, but haven't touched the belt on the deck yet that is still great. Now for two winters i had a snowblower on and i believe that is what caused my drive belt to go out. These tractors are lawn tractors not garden tractors, there is a difference i found out the hard way. Now im looking for a older garden tractor cause i want to be able to blow snow, till, plow, and mow. The la series aren't big and heavy enought for this what were you useing the machine for when it broke?
