easy to get at, it is toward the front of tranny(not at way top) so you dont have to take hitch plate off. I use a funnel that has a hose on the bottom(bought it at wal-mart) and put the hose down thru the hole where you shift gears and right into tranny. Dont remember exact amount.. Ill look it up though.

Help Re: John Deere 212 Tranaxle humming.

is it mis-communication or do i need to unbolt the shifter? i will go look at it in a bit to see what i can see without taking it all apart. This is one thing i wished i did when it was all apart. Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far too!

Help Re: John Deere 212 Tranaxle humming.

it dosen't sound like a rattle or vibration or anything. it is a loud annoying hum. i will take a video with my cell phone tomorrow or tuesday and try to put it on here and if not i'll make a youtube. i just don't want it to get worse and have a real mess on my hands while plowing this winter. Snows coming and theres no way to stop it!

No, do not unbolt shifter. just run tube along side shifter gate and down into upper drain plug hole

A changing noise like you describe may be a bearing changing it's tune under load.. if it gets loud and obnoxious then call on "Elwood" (couldn't resist!!) to use a mechanic's stethescope to listen to it after you jack/block it up to determine where the racket is coming from..

View My Video

Heres a video where you can hear the humming good. Bad quality but deal with it, it was my cellphone.

That cotton picker is loud!

Check the level, and change that transmission oil!

There is a little noise that sounds a little louder, but that humming sounds is just the variator system noise. Mine makes that noise, bearly audible when going slow and the faster I go the more it hums/whines. It gets really audible when I am in second and the last notch on the variator shifter. If its a problem, then I'll have something to learn too.

Do you really think its the variator?!? I didn't think it would be because like if you go over a bump it will stop for a second and then start again so i pretty much ruled out all of the components.

Not that uncommon for those trannys to make a little noise. Do the fluid change first. Its easy. I used synthic gear lube in my 112. Mine was a little noisy before, and did quite down some.[granted the fluid had not been changed in.... ahhh... ever. ] After that you can work to narrow it down. Might also be a idel pulley bearing making a noise.

Help Re: John Deere 212 Tranaxle humming.

do you really think its bearing noise? usually bearing just sound dry, i've never heard one like that! I'll check out the pulleys tomorrow. And did anyone ever say how much the transaxle holds?! I want to know that so i don't drain it out and end up going to NAPA a dozen times!!

Well I belive the 200 series, and my old 112 take the same tranny... I got two bottles of gear lube, and did not use them all. So.. about 1 1/2 bottles
