Picked this gem up this morning. Story goes it was winterized three years ago and sat since. Definitely had a couple mods done to it. The rear tow bar looks a little beefier than stock and there's a bracket welded to the front that might be for suitcase weights? How rare is the hydraulic lift? Pix as it just came off the trailer:

Made some progress tonight. Put in a fresh battery, turned the key and... nothing. Pulled the ignition switch and cleaned the contacts and got the motor to spin. Surprised my first guess was right. Added some fresh gas and turned. She spins and spins but doesn't start. Stuck a spark plug on the lead and grounded the electrode to the negative terminal of the battery with a jumper. Very intermittent weak spark. Not even sure how these make spark since there's no coil. Must be a magneto ignition? Its a Kohler K181S 8 HP.

Nice find !!!!!!!! :fing32: That front end makes it look tough.
Cleaned up great for just a wash.:trink40:
It needs less than my 175 :fing20:

those hydraulic lift is not rare but hard to find people tend not to get ride of them because of that hydro lift but none the less awesome find awesome

Well, there's definitely no coil. Looks like the 110/112 diagram (thanks PA318Guy :fing32:) I pulled the engine cover and in the process excavated the condenser and points. The points are right around where they are on my 214. Only on this beast it looks like I have to pull the muffler to get to them :banghead3 A project for tomorrow. Also seems odd that when I pull the plug its not wet. I verified that there is fuel at the carb inlet and blew starter fluid into the intake and still got nada for the engine firing so I'm guessing/hoping either the points and/or condenser are the problem. Seems like they made the magneto to be a non-serviceable item. Maybe this is the uber-rare 110H with magneto ignition...

Wow!!:swow: There is nothing like a new toy :greendr:( no matter how old it and you are):trink39:

I know the 175 is no collectors item,:crybaby: but it sure is better than no toy. you have the bonus of a great toy !!!!!!!!:fing32:

More pics as the clean -up continues, please:congrats:

Thanks KATT. Not so much cleanup yet - still in tear down to try and figure out the no spark problem. Its actually intermittent spark at this point. With the plug sitting on the engine block I can get a couple of sparks out of it but when its back in the block I don't even get a fart. Going to go to the dealer tomorrow and pick up a new condenser. Checked the points and regapped to .020 and they read under 2 ohms closed so I think they're OK, although I'll probably grab a new set anyway. My garage looks like 100 monkeys ran through it looking for the metric vice grips. I had to stand 10 feet back just to capture the debris field.

when you get a new toy, you gotta get all the tools out, since you have to go in 100 directions @ once... should I clean it before I get it running ?? No get it running first... or should I clean enough to help get it running, or clean it enough so I want to get it running, or should I get more tools out??

Fun isn't it. :fing20::bananapow:bannana:

You SO hit the nail on the head. I'm a "make it run before I clean it" hacker but then I never quite get back to cleaning. There's more I could do to the 214 but once it runs and does its job I have a hard time getting motivated to clean it up since I know it'll just get dirty again. Maybe that's why all the 100 series have gotten precisely one bath in their time with me.

BOSOX - I've been thinking about cleaning the carb; PO said it had been winterized but that means many things to different people. I'm just leary of messing with carbs after my Craftsman RER adventure (a few weekends fighting with a Tecumseh carb and still couldn't get it to run like I wanted) so I tend to avoid fooling with them. But that's why I started this project - to do things I haven't either done or done well yet so I may give it a shot.

After seeing my pic of the tool tornado I decided to clean up and call it a night and figured out a new way to park them. Must be room for more...

I think new points and condensor should cure the int. spark problem. Myself, i'd pull the carb and give it a good rinsing with cleaner as well. Never know if it was drained before the tractor was discarded in the barn. Good luck, real nice machine you found.

Well, it seems like my problem is no spark and no fuel. Changed out the condenser; still crappy spark. Changed the points and finally got some blue(ish) regular spark to work with. Put in a new plug and still just cranks. I was using a spare plug to test fire off the block so I kind of figured the plug that was on the block should come out wet but it didn't. So following BOSOX advice I pulled the carb, drained the fuel tank and pulled the float bowl. Stuck the whole thing in a tub of Gunk degreaser and going to let it soak for a bit.
