JD 332 Alternator or Regulator?

ok, so i go to jump on my 332 today and the battery is dead, so I jump it and start to mow. The next thing I know the mower deck shuts off followed by the tractor itself. Jumped it again and let it run for awhile shut it off and go to turn it back on and I have no power. Both the ground and power cords are new as well as the battery. so I assumed it had to be the Alternator, but now I am second guessing myself because when I pulled the regulator off i noticed some corrosion as well as the back side of it where the corroded wire is has melted the plastic clip and even on the back side of the regulator you can see where it burned into it. So what is the best way to test both of them to determine which one is bad? Thanks

Your Alternator could be putting out its maximum amperage output, but if one of your alternator's diodes/rectifiers is bad, the most voltage you will get from it is about 11.8 volts which is not enough voltage to keep the battery charged. Measure your voltage across your battery at rest and with the engine running. You should see about 14.2 or so volts DC with the engine running. Less than 12 volts DC, Diode problem. Your regulator could be good because if the voltage into it isn't high enough, it can't output the correct voltage. If the diodes are bad it may be time to rebuild the Alternator or buy a rebuilt on with a warranty.

Thanks for the answer.....I was actually only getting 11.8 with the engine running. I was hoping it was just the regulator. Below is a pictures of it. Wondering if I shouldn't just replace it?

You have 11.8 volts to the battery with the engine running, you should have between 13.5 and 14.5 volts DC. Unplug the alternator and put your multi-meter leads on the two wires coming from the alternator, with the engine running you should see around 35 volts AC coming out of the alternator. If your alternator checks out, replace the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is a common problem on these tractors. I had to replace the VR on both my 332 and 322. TIP: use some dielectric grease on the plug when you install the new VR.

Well, I was getting 45 ac volts with the alternator unplugged and with it plugged into the regualtor. I charged the battery over night and was getting 16-17 volts while running.

I believe I'd have that battery load tested.

16-17 volts is too much charging voltage.

I think there was a TSB about the 318 overcharging - not so sure abou the 332.

It might be my volt meter, because I thought it was high too so I tested the battery on my truck with it and was getting 16.8 volts.
