gt262 stuck trans

hey everyone. This gt262 is a garage find, probably sitting for many years (couldn't tell you how many). My role in it all is I was asked by the owner to have a look and see if I could get it running. KNowing nothing about its history, I figured I'd pull it out of her garage and bring it to mine, where I am more comfortable and have all my tools. So, grabbed my trailer, but when I went to move it, it was in gear and the shifter was loose and wobbly. So, muscled it up on my trailer, brought her home, and first thing I did was wash off the years of dust and dirt. Must say, it cleaned up nicely, and this made me a little more positive. So, went on to pulling the seat, rear fender and gas tank to get a good view of the trans and shifter linkage. Well, looks like the last user had a strong arm, because the 2 brackets that hold the crossbar of shifter bar were busted off...thus the loose play in shifter. I am guessing this is were it was put to bed in the garage and left till I came into the picture. So, she's stuck in gear I am assuming? The gear box is a tuff torq by kanzaki by the way. The pulley up top turns and after removing the belt, I was able push it to a location closer to my shop, in gear of course. Neutral would have been nice in this instance. I knocked the gear arm a few times to see if it would break free but it seems quite content where its at. Anyway, so as to get something accomplished, even though I pulled the tank, I wanted to hear her turn over. there was still some gas I could see in the filter, so pulled the neutral sensor and jumped it and had a charger on the battery, and gave her a go. It cranked, and with a little bit of starter spray in the air box, it came to life. So, that made me happy. the carb seemed to handle being woken up like a champ. So, my gut is telling me I got a trans problem. Oil check on trans looked nice and full. couldnt say if it was one of those after the fact fills, where previous user had problem first then added fluid to try and fix. Whatever the case, this is where I'm at. Any help on freeing up the gearbox or any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. I currently have an la115 that I use all the time, and this gt262 seems like a much better built machine, wanna say more solid, so it would be nice to bring here back to her former glory. thanks ( :

Added a pic so you can see the shifter bar broken and the trans linkage stuck where it's at...wanna say it's one of the higher gears based on my pushing experience.

Out of curiosity's sake I was browsing the exploded views for this trans just the other day. There is not much in there to go wrong. I wonder if the spring loaded detent system could become jammed by crud ??? Might be worth gently tapping on the shift lever on the trans to see if the shock with knock it loose. Some times this works when brute force does not.

That's a good place to start. Thanks. I did tap it with a hammer a few times with no result, but I hear what your saying. Maybe sort of like a couple of guick repetative percussive persuasion taps. When you say it could be crudded up by the detent spring, do you mean internally. I got it pretty clean on the outside, but what your saying, having seen the blow up of the trans, that would make sense. I'll post the results as soon as I play around with it again...

Number 9 slides back and forth on number 8. Ball number 13 is pushed into the grooves in number 8 which then locates the shift fork and number 20 and hence numbers 17 in the proper place to select the gear. Number 20 also has to slide smoothly on it's shaft.

So had some time to pull the trans. Easy enough, and makes it a lot easier to work on. I tried tapping the gear lever, not hard, from both sides. Maybe about a 1/4" play either direction. Made sure I had the clutch pulled in as if it was pedal down. Does that sound about right? Now, I never worked on a gearbox on these before, so I'm not sure what is right and what is not. But the clutch lever sure has a lot of play in it, id say freely moving, no tension or spring back. Could this be my problem?

Also forgot to ask. Can somone just walk me through the controls off of trans there was the gear lever, the clutch, the there was another lever on other side...brake? And as far as topside cpntrols, it the gear pull switch for a pto. Was this and option on these?

In the LH pic the long vertical lever on the lh side is the brake. There is shown an interlock lever that actually is pinned to the shift detent rod that the shift fork rides on. It would seem that if this interlock lever was not in the right orientation then maybe the shifter wouldn't move. I have absolutely no experience with these units. Just going by intuition and what I see on the parts diagrams.

this interlock lever is on the rh side of the case as is sits in the pic. i.e. on the opposite side from the brake cover plate. See if you can move this interlock lever either forward or backward and see if the shift lever frees up.

Appreciate your help. That makes sense. I am tempted to open it up to see what's going on, but fear a bunch of springs and splines and what have you popping out...plus wanna be 100% its not something fixable from the outside. Could you send me a,link to the blow up parts diagram. Can't seem to find one online. I wonder if the gears are okay and it's just the clut h not allowing it to shift? Is the clutch a hard repair?

As far as I know there is no internal clutch. It's all done via the traction drive belt idler plate.

I just go to the Bomberger's JD site, click on Look Up Parts, type in the model number, hit enter, select alphabetical and then select which ever letter, say T for transmission shift linkage or whatever.

Thanks for that info. i was checking out some of the diagrams. Logic would tell me that the clutch, or in this case, whatever releases the gear to the drivetrain, might be the issue? It seems whatever gear it's in, everything can move, it's just stuck in that gear. When i turn one hub, the other moves freely in opposite direction, when I turned the axle with wheels on, it moved and the pulley up top moved. I might eventually pull it apart, but any pointers? And what do you all think I should be looking for? It looks like there is a separate access by the "clutch" arm. Should I start there. I guess worst case scenario, I get an eBay used assembly $200 - $300). But if it' something I can fix, I'd opt for that, but my skills with gears isnt all that refined.
Also, I did play around with it a little last night. I had the brake arm in, the clutch arm in (as it would be when sitting on the mower with brake and clutch pedal down) , and tried to get the gear arm to turn, but no luck. I am still wondering if the clutch arm is supposed to be that loose? anyone out there know. There is pretty much complete play in it. I'd think normal would be that it would have some resistance, or spring back?
