JD 165 hydro or LX176

Going to purchase 1 of the 2. Both have 38inch decks and the 165 comes with bagger and snow blower with weights. LX176 is just the mower. LX 176 is $600 and 165 is $700. New to this any input? My yard is flat and only 3/4 of an acre.

The 165 would be my choice its defiantly the better deal.

Re: JD 165 hydro or LX176

Theyre both nice machines. I have a 165, my brother has the LX176 and we both have 3/4 acre yards. I got mine with a 38" deck, 42" plow and a dump cart for $350. He got his with a 38" deck, a dethatcher, roller and cart for $350

His is a bit nicer being newer and it has more power but I have no complaints about mine. I wish I got a snowblower instead of the plow. Since the 165 your looking at comes with the bagger and snow blower with weights, Id probably go with that if its in decent shape

Re: JD 165 hydro or LX176

The 165 is a hydrostatic transaxle. One thing you'll definitely want to do is test drive it until its really warm. Transaxles work well when they're cold, because the fluid in them is thicker... You can only tell if the transaxle is any good once its warmed up. Other than that, getting a 165 with a bagger, a blower AND the weights is a heck of a deal! Those weights are REALLY rare. I love my 160 with its blower as its very nimble yet fits into small spaces. Just make sure you get ALL the parts for the blower... It should include 2 braces (big long thick chunks of metal that run from the blower mount back to the rear mount points on the tractor) the mule drive (chunk of black metal with two pulleys on it, the blower won't work without that), the tensioner spring and tensioner hook (puts tension on the mule drive) the lift rod and the chute rod. I'll try to dig up my pictures of those parts for ya in a bit.

Tough to say without seeing them, or knowing where you live. If both machines were equal in mechanical condition, and you live in a area that see's snow. I would say get the 165 (more bang for the buck) It all boils down to what you need. Try out both machines and see what you like better

Re: JD 165 hydro or LX176

Thanks for the info. Both machines appear to be in decent shape with the LX176 slightly better being newer. I live in MD so depending on the winter we have the blower could be useful but not something I couldn't live without. The bagger for leaves in the fall would be a plus.

Only issue with the bagger is that the grass has to be really dry for it to work reasonably. Otherwise, you're clogging all the time. I love mine for vacuuming up the leaves in the Fall tho, its a long sight better than raking!

Price wise 165 is way to go. I am partial to the 165. You are giving up a few hp. But probably will never feel it by the seat of the pants unless you push the 165 to the limits.

Tyson, the way my 180 is with bagger not sure on clogging!? I made error and ran my 180 with high lift blades over some poplar tree seed pods and forgot dad laid down fresh top soil and grass seed. Um lets just say I had 30 pounds easy of top soil in one bag and a cloud of dust so heavy it covered my car and his truck with dirt! Way my machine sucked I see it not clogging easy! LOL

On the question of which machine, all good points to follow! The 165 is better sounding deal like Deere 332 says. Tyson is correct on seeing how hydro is in heat. Good luck!

Oh don't get me wrong Eric, the bagger and high lift blades will suck up enormous amounts of stuff... just that wet grass is heavy, dense and it sticks to the plastic of the chute. Particularly if you're using mulching blades like I am. The clippings basically turn into Cole slaw (mowing of Cole slaw is probably a violation of my warrantee). Anything else, yeah, the bagger just sucks right up... I love hitting a big patch of pine cones!

Got ya Tyson! You should have seen mess I made! My old bagger tractor didn't do half the job the 180 can do! I covered my car and his truck in quarter inch of dust! My cars windows were cracked as well. Learned to only use it on established lawn!

Re: JD 165 hydro or LX176

My first tractor was a new 165. Ran it to death for 25 years. I always cut high to try and keep the bagger tube from clogging, but it was frustrating. Sounds like 165 is a good deal. Bagger with the high lift are great for fall cleanup. Good luck
