how long do batteries last?

i have a jd 111 that was repowered with a 12 hp motor back in the 80's not sure when but the battery was bad when i got so i changed it to a new one and it lasted for about 2 yrs but i kept a trickle charger on it every winter. i replaced the battery cables and the power went out during a bad freeze and froze the battery. put a used one in and it lasted 2 yrs the only problem i had with the machine last year is the broken throttle and the electric clutch kept shutting off then the engine would die and never close to the shop.now the battery won't hold a charge. so how long do these batteries usually last?

Their like Forest's mothers box of chocolates. You never know what you'll get. I had them last 7 months and 7 years. Doesn't make much difference if the are cheap or expensive. Last one I bought lasted from April to November but they replaced it.

Re: how long do batteries last?

The battery on my newest x738 just died this week. Stone dead, would jump but couldn't hold a charge for more than a day. Two years. Dealer gave me a new one, no charge as in money. I had a 165 for 25 years. 2 batteries. An x500 never a new battery, sold it with original battery. It's is just the luck of the draw I guess

Re: how long do batteries last?

I'm still running the original battery in my 2006 vintage X500. I use it year-round (rather than having it sit unattended for half the year).

Occasionally, I connect a 1.5Amp battery maintainer to it if I've done a lot of starting in a relatively short time and the run times were short.

Re: how long do batteries last?

My father-in-law, who bought my GT235 just replaced his battery a few months ago......it was original from 2003. Now my record with batteries in my trucks and cars is not nearly that awesome, always seems about 3-4 years is all I get. The GT235 battery was a 500 CCA battery, so it was beefy.

I either buy really cheap batteries or really good ones depending on what they are going in.

The cheap ones I usually buy are the super cheap Walmart Everstart batteries (cheapest? battery you can buy, car batteries run about $50, lawn tractor batteries run about $20, not including core). They last about 1-2.5 years depending on how they are used.

The good batteries I buy are usually either Napa Legend or Duralast Gold (AutoZone).
They cost about $100-150 (not including core) and last 2.5-6 years in my experience.

I have a NAPA battery that is now five years old. It accepted a full charge this week and easily starts a 20 HP Briggs & Stratton Twin. It is a 230 CCA battery - which NAPA now has on sale for $35.99. The $21.99 battery is only 150 CCA.

I have found they last until you need the tractor the most. Then they won't take a charge or can be jumped.

Re: how long do batteries last?

It is best to keep a battery charged when not using it during winter months. As soon as a battery looses it's charge and can freeze, it will be permanently damaged.

On a side note, I just replaced a 10 year old battery in my SUV and was still working fine. Just did it because it was winter and didn't want to take any chances. Probably would last a few more years.

Re: how long do batteries last?

While my experience has been all over the place as well, I found that I've been having much better luck since I got better about watching the water level in the battery. I don't use the tractor in the winter, so at the end of the fall season I pull the battery out and check the water level in each cell, adding distilled water if needed. Then I also use a 2 amp charger/maintainer (this one: BLACK+DECKER 2 Amp Waterproof Battery Maintainer-BC2WBD - The Home Depot) from time to time during the winter to keep some charge on it. The last time I bought a battery was a Deere "StrongBox" in 2011.

I'll also use that charger to top the battery off if I do a lot of starting without a lot of running time, just like SkipD mentioned.

Re: how long do batteries last?

From my Experience . Every prior post is Right,. Here lies the possible problem. A dead battery. (wet cell) Will Sulfate In several weeks , some fully, some partially. after that there Useful Life is cut short. . Fallow the Batteries trail. It is Manufactured. ( only God knows Where) Sets on the Shelve. How long A month or to. Sent to the Jobler? Warehouse? To the dealer? . Was it Kept charged Throughout All that travel. . Then The Unit it is installed in, Only Charges the Surface charge . . I put a Bank (6 32 Batteries $185.00 EA.) in the Motorhome , After 7 Years I took them Out For replacement . Back to the Factory DYNO. They tested them and said they were Like new. I said Replace them... I did.. As for my tractors. I buy the Best Walmart Has. I plan on 2 Years . Any time over that is a Bonus. The Bottom line is . You Get what you pay for. And If taken care of will last Accordingly ;; Life is good... We all know some one had them last 10 or 2 years.

Re: how long do batteries last?

Just two comments to add or reinterate here,

1. You are generally offered at least two batteries with two different CCA (cold cranking amp) ratings. For the extra 10 or 15 bucks, always take the higher rating and keep the engine spinning over faster.

2. Always keep the engine tuned up and be quick on the hand choke so the engine fires right up after 2 or 3 seconds of cranking. If you have to crank the balls off it to get it to start, be prepared to buy both batteries and starter motors on a regular basis as they won't last.

As a mechanic, people would always ask, "What's the difference between the cheap battery and the expensive one ?" and I would tell them, "It's the price of the first service call for a boost." and "Then you still have to live with that cheap battery for another 4 yrs."

Just my Cdn nickle's worth.......

Re: how long do batteries last?

Just replaced the battery in 425 this spring and it was stamped 2008. The previous winter it would always start but sounded a little sluggish, this past winter it didn't have enough umph to start if really cold and finally completely died this spring. Car batteries I usually get 5-7 years on average. My '03 Chevy and '07 Honda have had the battery replaced once in their lifetime.
